Global Isai Music Festival ’16 brings down acts from Reunion Island, the US and more
The first edition didn’t quite take off, he concedes. But this year, even as Phoenix MarketCity will reverberate with music from 13 bands, Eddie knows it’s no time to be bashful. The festival has gained prominence the world over, and he has just received a request from a Turkish band to be part of the 2017 event. “We have been looking for indigenous, unique music from across the world,’’ says Eddie, who is hopeful of a daily floating population of 5,000.
The year’s lineup straddles several countries and genres, ranging from the Maloya music of Reunion Island to jazz from a band (Katamon Cherry) in Israel to Bengaluru-based band, Space Is All We Have, and their genre of postmodern ambient space rock. This, besides the usual dose of classic and experimental rock, groove, funk and jazz.
Zimbabwean musician Blessing Chimanga says this is his ‘first performance in India but surely not his last, and the audience can look forward to 45 minutes of jazz and blues by his band, the Blessing Chimanga Trio’. Known famously as Bled, the 24-year-old plays the marimba, besides other percussion instruments, apart from writing his songs in English and the Zimbabwean language, Shona.
Feted vocalist Shenkar from Los Angeles, who has collaborated with legends like Frank Zappa, says he visits Chennai at least thrice a year, and this is his third performance for the Isai Festival. But this year, he has “brand new material”, which includes a piece in which they’ve incorporate a speech by Charlie Chaplin, besides several tracks from their upcoming album, Radiotronics. Also expect EDM with positive lyrics for the young audience.
