Bang in the middle of Lavelle Road, The Glass House takes ambience to new levels. Pegged as a deli, bistro and bar, the menu offers modern European cuisine with a list of unusual offerings like the complimentary flat bread with olive oil and za’tar to teriyaki chicken pizza as well as a wide selection of brews and an interesting range of breads and sandwiches. Even the cutlery boasts of a twist with wooden slabs replacing conventional ceramic plates.

The highlight of the place however, is its atmosphere. The main structure of a high-ceilinged glass house is accentuated by a canopy of painted autumn leaves and dark wood interiors that give you a sense of seclusion without feeling cramped. Plus, a long bar that extends to the patio with water bodies lined with wrought-iron figures of fish.

We began our meal with the beef carpaccio and were not disappointed. Not underdone or chewy, it came with the conventional seasoning of pepper and vinaigrette. The sirloin was served with a garnish of shaved parmesan cheese that acted as the perfect palate cleanser. We chose to go the bistro way for our main course and opted for sandwiches.

While the tuna, that came with a topping of boiled egg and a bed of rocket, could have done with a little more piquancy, it was filling and a sprinkling of tobasco set it straight. It is served on ciabatta bread which complements the creamy texture of the filling nicely. The pulled chicken variant with a slightly tangy mix of tomato and mayonnaise was tasty but proved tricky to handle as the bread it was served on was a tad too soft for the heavy filling.

The dessert section boasts of cheesecakes, tarts and a list of pastries, but we chose to sample their wide selection of international coffee — Columbian to Vietnamese. The infused tea menu didn’t disappoint either. The cappuccino we ordered was frothed to perfection and should easily hit the spot for all ardent caffeine addicts. The space however, offers the ideal ambience for a quiet, intimate evening or cozy catch-up session with friends.
