Namrata Joshipura’s Spring Summer 2017 collection is a mixed bag of trends, textures, fabrics and more

Namrata Joshipura has had a good 2016. In fact, with her designs being worn by Priyanka Chopra, Nargis Fakhri, Richa Chaddha and Lisa Ray among others, one can safely say she’s had a great year. But she’s not one to rest on her achievements. Barely two weeks into 2017, and the designer has already got her hands full with fittings, shoots, new collections, collaborations and more. We caught up with her to talk about her new line, plans for the year and her collaboration with Adidas.

What was the inspiration for the collection?
New York is one of my favourite cities and it was only fitting to use the city as an inspiration. So in keeping with the vibe of New York, the collection is a heady mix of fabrics, textures, colours and embellishments.

    Describe the collection.
I wanted to make a fun, easy-to-wear line and that is exactly what it is. You’ll see off shoulder tops, fitted crop tops, boxy crop tops, swing dresses, dhoti pants and jumpsuits. I’ve gone for a laidback yet chic look.

Tell us about the fabrics used.
As it’s the Spring Summer line, I’ve worked with light silks, georgette, acetate, drapey jersey and light denim.

What is special about the collection?
We included a lot of textural elements and embellishments made with embroidery and bugle beads, which make each piece stand apart. There’s a bit of textured cottons and silk and cotton blended fabrics, which are perfect for summer evenings.

Pick out a few key pieces from the line.
The off-shoulder swing dress with white beading on flared sleeves is highly recommended. It’s available in mint green and frosty pink. Our sleeveless summer jacket is also a must-have this summer. It’s of mid-calf length, and is made from silk-cotton and georgette, and bears prints and embellishments.

Tell us about your collaboration with Adidas.
I was one of the three designers commissioned to restyle the iconic Sam Smith shoe, to celebrate his visit to India. I created a shoe with golden stripes and crystal embellishments, which really caught everyone’s eye. Smith really liked it and I later heard that he would like to include it in a book he is writing.
