    Mamma Mexicana offers authentic Tex-Mex delicacies and spice-infused finger foods

     

    Set IN one of the city’s most popular culinary destinations, Mamma Mexicana has a bright welcoming niche of its own with a touch of quirk. Plus, a mix of regional cuisine, Tex-Mex great margaritas and house cocktails as we discovered.

    Starting out
    We got our first taste of Mexico with the margaritas, that come both shaken and frozen as well as in a range of flavours like strawberry and kiwi. We chose the classic version. It was far better than the regular margarita mixes served at most places. They also offer a range of tequila-based house specials and classic cocktails like sangria, mojito and caipiroska.
    Tucking in
    Off to a good start, we turned our attention to the nibbles that had arrived. All kneaded and baked in-house, the Tex-Mex nachos and quessadilas stuffed with chicken came with a choice of five dips – sour cream, pico de gallo, refried beans, salsa, guacamole and cheese. The nachos were crisp and topped with jalapeños, cabbage and cheese – simple yet scrumptious, and the quessadilas were filling with a tangy touch. What was an interesting addition however, was the jerk chicken skewer that bore a slight resemblance to the Indian kebab but found its own in the marinade of tomato and pepper.
    Spicing it up
    Main course took a more authentic turn and we were served the margarita chicken – grilled leg of chicken spiked with tequila flavoured margarita sauce, and the fish Creole – basa encrusted with black and white sesame seeds served with tomato jalapeño coulis. The most noteworthy observation of the mains was the succulent quality of the meat and the perfection to which it was cooked – neither chewy nor too rubbery. For those who prefer a bit of red meat, the vaquero steak, a house speciality, is well worth a try with its topping of refried beans, roasted red pepper, avocado chunks and chilli sauce.
    Vegetarians have plenty of options too and the refried bean burger is both tasty and filling. A must mention is their side of green salad that is a simple combination of lettuce and vinaigrette dressing.

    The dessert menu is not too extensive but entirely home-made and delectable featuring gooey brownies and divine apple pies.
