Kochi’s Salt Studio comes to the city with its debut collection of Kanjivarams
Accomplishing her long cherished dream of opening a fashion boutique in her hometown, 26-year old Diya John with support from her husband John Joseph, started Salt Studio in Kochi, two years ago. With offbeat motifs and unusual colour combinations, her first exhibition in Chennai will showcase her debut collection of Kanjivaram and linen silk saris. Also expect cocktail and cape dresses some linen kurtis, tops and tunics designed with straight cuts and drop shoulder patterns. For the wedding season, Diya is bringing hand-picked anarkalis, party skirts and palazzos.
Talking about adding saris to her repertoire, Diya says, “I have used pastel colours like peach, mauve and grey which are not typically seen in Kanjivaram saris. The linen silk saris have rare themes like- warrior and toota taara (inspired from sky, moon and stars) with sharp etched designs and patterns. There are some unusual embellishments on the linen saris like hand embroidered dragonflies.” There are also a few hand-painted, block printed and bridal themed linen-silk saris. The designer sourced her threads from Surat as it was difficult to find muted, antique silver threads in Kanchipuram, where Diya gets her saris weaved. Besides the easy to wear tuck-in saris which are bold yet traditional, Diya is also exhibiting per-stitched blouses which include anti-fit styles that are a rage right now. The Kochi-based designer is currently working on her website and plans to exhibit her clothes in multi designer showrooms across the country.
Rs 10,500 onwards for saris, at English Tea Room, on December 2 and 3, 10 am-8 pm. Details: 24996499
