Amrita Fredrick veers away from the Boradway classic in her contemporary take of Les Miserables
When youave been involved with musicals for at least 10 years, kicking off with one for your new theatre groupas maiden production is no surprise. So when Amrita Fredrick, 25, founder and artistic director of The Ku Ku Company, picked the musical Les Miserables (based on Victor Hugoas novel) for their first production, no one really batted an eyelid. But thatas not the only reason, says Fredrick, who is also directing the play. a?Musicals in Chennai have always been contemporary. Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Hairspray, Mamma Miaayou name it.
Les Miserables is semi-classical and that was one of the reasons why we picked it,a? says the artiste who has been involved with several of the aforementioned musical productions with groups like Stagefright Productions, The Hot Shoe Dance Company and Stray Factory. a?People usually play it safe, but we want to push the envelope. I think this could be something that has the potential to change the theatre scene here,a? she adds excitedly.
With the original Broadway musical production celebrating its 30th year this year a and with the success of the movie versionaFredrick felt this might be the right time for a Chennai version with 30 actor-singers, 20 choristers and six musicians. The finishing touches to the score are by music director Augustine Paul. And look out for familiar names like Yohan Chacko, Sandeep John, Nadisha Thomas and Sunny Abraham in the musical. a?Weave got so much talent in Chennaiatalent that can stage the likes of Les Miserables and pull it off. So Iave got no doubts on that score,a? assures the confident director.
