U & I brings comedy for a cause
Stand up comedians Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, Naveen Richard, Sundeep Rao and Praveen Kumar are performing tonight as part of the Charity Comedy Festival. All proceeds from the festival will go towards charitable organisation, U & I, who are also the hosts. “We have around 800 kids whom we support with non-formal education,” says Joash Benjamin, manager, fundraising at U & I. “We have nine centres across the country and support as many kids as we can through our various campaigns,” adds Benjamin.
The Charity Comedy Festival, which will be held in Whitefield tonight, has some of the best names in comedy. Kanan Gill, who catapulted into fame with his YouTube videos, has quickly become the poster boy for Indian comedy. He is known for his topical jokes. Kenny Sebastian is all about that observational humour with topics covering Indian culture and its stereotypes. He has written and hosted a show on Comedy Central and released comedy shows online.
Comedian Naveen Richard is part of the YouTube sketch comedy group, Them Boxer Shorts. He has made a name for himself by finding the funny in everyday situations. Stand-up king Sundeep Rao tackles social issues and talks about his own disability as he is partially blind. He is an improv actor and brings spontaneity to the stage. For clean jokes that are equally humourous, Praveen Kumar is the man. Kumar’s strength lies in his observational comedy.
U & I, which hosts charity concerts and food festivals in support of underpriveleged children, started out in 2011. “We picked a comedy festival this time around because that is what is in right now. Crowds love comedy and we thought it is also a bit of change from what we normally do,” concludes Benjamin.
