Vishnuvardhan says his favourite films are packed with smart stunts and emotion
Director Vishnuvardhan, Tamil cinema’s very own action movie specialist, whose latest Aarambham is having a good run at the box office, takes us on a tour of his favourite action films.“I wouldn’t call my films like Aarambam or Billa action films. There is more drama in them. Action is not about one guy mindlessly fighting a dozen ruffians on the street. There should be some logic to it. One should find the screenplay and story in that action,” says Vishnuvardhan naming Akira Kurosowa, Martin Scorsese and Guy Ritchie as his icons, he shares his most wanted movies.
Matrix: Among my long list of action films, I would still pick this 1999 American-Australian science fiction action film starring Keanu Reeves for one simple reason –mind blowing mechanical action sequences.
IP Man: This semi biographical martial arts Hong Kong movie is a favourite, as it connects with me on an emotional level. The film is loosely based on the life of Yip Man, a grandmaster of the martial arts wing chun and master of Bruce Lee. It’s a moving experience.
All Jackie Chan films: If you like action, you automatically love Jackie Chan. I especially loved his Armour of God. His films are not gory or bloody, they have a very Charlie Chaplin-ish image. I love those little nuances and gimmicks in them.
