Iconic actor Danny Trejo is back with Machete Kills – a film directed by Robert Rodriguez and in which the actor reprises the role of moviedom’s first Latino action hero. The film includes Lady Gaga in the all-star cast. “Hollywood is moving away from the hackneyed Latino stereotypes. Actors like Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas have found a place in Hollywood,” says the actor as he goes on to answer a few questions:
What makes Machete Kills different from Machete for you as an actor?
Unlike the first one, heavy with political commentary, Machete Kills is all action. I love doing action movies and this film was something I thoroughly enjoyed doing. It’s full of surprises, double the action and lots of adventure.
Robert Rodriguez has a special connect with you, how would you describe the man who is your second cousin and the filmmaker?
I think he’s done more for independent filmmaking than anybody in the last 50 years. The difference between Robert and a lot of movie people is that Robert wants to share. Everybody else wants to keep their secrets, but if Robert comes up with a new way of shooting, he immediately just tweets it. That’s what I love about him. He has no secrets. His movie sets sometimes have tours.
As a child who saw real life violence from up close, any of the scenes dredge up old memories?
Robert Rodriguez comes from a comic book background. The violence in Machete is almost funny. It’s not gory. You’re shocked, and then you laugh. I have forgotten most of my past life and don’t like to talk about it.
Tell us about Vieques and The Prey, your other releases of the year?
Well, The Prey is sort of a thriller/action film and the other one is a horror movie.
The movie is scheduled to release on October 25.
