Pick up oils on canvas, wall art and more from Shetal Parrek’s new studio.
After having completed corporate projects at the Taj, L&T, Asiana Hotel and Marriot Madurai, artist Shetal Parrek is opening her first studio-cum-store, Beyond Canvas, in the city. Located in upscale Khader Nawaz Khan Road, it will have a range of wall art and oils on canvas, in addition to functional art pieces (such as trays and tea light holders) made with mixed media—fused glass and mosaic to upcycled materials. Also on offer will be customised pieces, furniture and personalised gifts. With a work area and a display space in the 400 sq ft studio, she says, “I do a lot of customising, so the display area will showcase different mediums and concepts.” Parrek picks two pieces: an old lamp she had bought while travelling in Indonesia and a coffee side table. “The lamp’s frame had a very rustic look, which really appealed to me. So I retained it and replaced the rest with fused glass, in a flowing design in shades of blue (Rs 10,000),” she says. The table (`9,000) is a sample of what she terms functional art. It can accommodate books, a cup of coffee and comes with a ledge that serves as a bookmark. “I’ve decorated it with a collage of some of my favourite books, authors and famous quotes,” says Parrek, 40, who is an active advocate of the upcycling movement in art. “Working on old pieces of furniture and giving them a new look excites me,” she adds, explaining that she likes working with window frames, discarded bottles and old magazines. Having exhibited in Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, she is eyeing Mumbai next.
Open from August 10. Prices from Rs 650. Details: 9940469000
