Ancient skin rituals get a modern showing at Kama Ayurveda’s flagship outlet in the city
They are no strangers to the city. In fact, their soaps, face oils and creams have been flying off the shelves at Good Earth and Amethyst. Now, Kama Ayurveda, the Delhi-based brand that’s given the ancient healing regimen a luxe look and feel, is consolidating its position by opening its first stand-alone store here. “Right from the start, we’ve been a treatment-based brand. While many of the competition merely added an element or two to get the ‘Ayurveda’ tag, all our products have authentic oils (anything from five to 15) as the active ingredients,” begins Delhi-based Vivek Sahni, who co-founded the brand with Dave Chang, Rajshree Pathy and Vikram Goyal in 2002.
What’s in store
While their 600 sq ft store at Phoenix Market City, with a pre-Colonial look and feel, will house all their key products—from the 2014 Elle Beauty Award-winning Dhanwantaram thailam (with sesame oil, gooseberry and green cardamom) to night creams with saffron and cleansers with rose oil and black cumin—Sahni promises new lines for men and expectant mums. “We are creating a full shaving regimen, including pre- and after-shave balms. We are also concentrating on skin care, with products for day and night,” he explains, keeping the ingredients under wraps and only admitting that the products will have “a concentrated set of actives”. For expecting and nursing mothers, expect massage oils, salves for sore breasts and balms for back pain.
“We’ve also started a doctor on call facility. You can consult them on any issue, not just for product recommendations,” he says. The facility will soon be available on their online store, too.
Noting that products with jasmine and tamarind have created a connect with Chennaiites, he admits the brand is also popular among the Korean community. “I think it is linked to the huge fan following we have in Japan (according to him, Kama features on their beauty blogs and sites),” he says. With six stores in the country—a number they plan to take to nine by the end of this year—and a presence in over 50 countries, the next step is to open stand-alone stores in France and Belgium.
