Britain’s largest motorcycle manufacturer brings its bikes to Chennai

If you believe the motorcycle defines the man, British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has been doing so since 1902. Think Marlon Brando, Bob Dylan, James Dean and Steve McQueen, to begin with. Since entering the Indian market last year, Triumph has set up seven dealerships across the country, starting with Bangalore. The eighth, Harbour City Triumph, opened shop at Ethiraj Salai this past weekend and, needless to say, men and women have been flocking.

In a quick chat with Vimal Sumbly, MD of Triumph India, we learn that Chennai has seen 30 bookings with 15 bikes already delivered (they promise your vehicle in 90 days). Around 450 Triu-mphs have been sold pan India since November 2013, and if all goes well, they hope to sell 500 more in the next six months. The figures aside, what you really need to know is that in addition to having their full range of bikes on display, the 4,000 sq ft showroom in Egmore also has an integrated service centre with five bikes doing the rounds on test rides. But the real highlight, Sumbly points out, is their ‘build your own bike configurator’. “It gives you a 360° view of your bike, with all the accessories that you choose,” he says. The showroom also houses accessories and apparel with something for the whole family — leather jackets, jeans and riding gear, T-shirts and miniature models for kids, among others.

So what about the bikes, you ask. Triumph is known for its mix of retro and sports offerings. Whether you are looking for the classic Bonneville (Rs. 5,81,620) or the slick Speed Triple ABS (`10,52,480), you will be pleased. Other popular models include the Daytona for a day at the track and the Tiger series for expedition junkies. And once you own your pair of wheels, you become part of the Rider Association of Triumph (RAT). “It has chapters wherever our dealerships are present,” says Sumbly, sharing that weekend rides are underway, with the Chennai chapter starting their rides in a couple of weeks. “We will start zonal and national rides as well in the future,” he shares, concluding with, “after all, the brand stands for the ride.”
The showroom is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Details: 9176029000
