Tina Ahuja talks fashion, films and her journey to the big screen with Second Hand Husbands
DESPITE the size zero fad, Bollywood debutantes are not shy about adding the pounds to get into character. Bhumi Pednekar, put on oodles of weight for Dum Laga Ke Haisha, and now newbie Tina Ahuja (nee Narmada ), has gained seven kilos for her debut outing, Second Hand Husbands. Ahuja is not an outsider to Bollywood—being actor Govinda’s daughter—and has an interesting tale on how she bagged the role. “The film happened because of my friends. I watched (filmmaker) Smeep Kang’s Punjabi film Carry On Jatta and loved its spunk—it reminded me of my father’s films. So I asked my friends, who knew him, for an introduction. We got talking, he narrated Second Hand Husbands and I took it up because I’ve faith in his confidence,” says the 26-year-old, adding that she chose the screen name Tina as a shout-out to her friends (it’s their nickname for her). The film follows a couple—played by Ahuja and Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal—trying to find a husband for Grewal’s ex-wife.
Her father’s daughter
Ahuja is already trending on social media for her comic renditions in the trailer. “Comedy is the vibe I carry. It probably has to do with watching my dad on sets. But I also hope to don glamorous roles and experiment with genres,” she says. Speaking about fashion, the actress who favours skirts and dresses, says she chooses clothes that are comfortable and complement her. “Style to me is what I wear. I love my Armani and Louis Vuitton, but you can also see me on Hill Road, shopping for jhumkas. I am a ‘sale’ junkie,” she smiles, adding that one day she’d like to start her own label. Signing off she says she’d love to work with directors like Imtiaz Ali, Rohit Shetty andVipul Shah, and hopes to feature in an action flick someday.
