With the world celebrating International Day of Yoga on June 21, sign up for free classes organised by numerous yoga schools and studios in the city. The classes include asanas, pranayama, meditation, aqua yoga and more.
Learn to live
Here’s a free session for Tuesday morning. Art of Living Chennai is organising camps across Virugambakkam, Avadi, Adyar, ICF, Moulivakkam and Nandambakkam, where they will teach Suryanamaskar and the basics of hatha yoga. From 7 am to 8 am. Details: 9840793611
Celebrate and meditate
On Sunday, the celebrations begin at Covelong Point Surf School with a yoga session at 6.30 am, followed by a meditation session at 7.30 am. After a South Indian breakfast (at 8.30 am), you can learn a spot of surfing, too. While the yoga session with breakfast costs `700, the whole package costs Rs 1,250. Details: 9840975916
Do it yourself
If you haven’t got around to learning your asanas yet, here’s your chance. The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram is holding free classes on International Yoga Day. Drop in between 7 am and 8 am and learn the basics of ashtanga yoga, pranayama and meditation. Details: 24937998
Amping up the fun is Zorba, which is organising a paddle board and aqua yoga session at The Park. Led by founder Sarvesh Sashi, the half-an-hour sessions will include aqua dance, too. While aqua yoga is a low-impact exercise, don’t try the paddle board unless you’ve been practising yoga for some time. Slots open from 5.45 pm onwards.
Find inner peace with free yoga classes at Rutland Gate Studio. There will be four sessions: ‘Cultivating Inner Strength’ , ‘Inside Out’, ‘The body as the temple of the soul’ and ‘Yoga for yourself and yoga for another’. Rise with sun
Head to Kottivakkam beach with your yoga mat as Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre is conducting free classes (6 am to 7.30 am). Meanwhile, at their centre, you can sign up for free classes and an evening satsang, including meditation and a talk on yoga (between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm).
