The latest microbrewery on the block offers a delectable range of hand crafted beers and a sumptuous spread
ON A STIFLINGLY hot Friday afternoon, we decided to brave the summer sun and pop over to 3 Monkeys, the latest to join the microbrewery bandwagon in town. Located on the bustling Old Madras Road, the brew pub offers a total of six different types of beer and a comprehensive menu that features Indian, European, Chinese and Thai dishes. A venture by Phani Kothwali, a serious beer connoisseur, the venue is spacious, dimly lit and the decor, a bit excessive. However, Kothwali explains that this is because he drew inspiration for the interiors from some of his favourite pubs and bars in Hong Kong.
Having spent a decade in Australia in cities like Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, Kothwali garnered a deep understanding of, arguably, the world’s favourite brew and returned to India to set up 3 Monkeys. After settling down on their plush chairs in a quiet corner, we tried the beer tasters, which Kothwali insisted we consumed in the right sequence.
First was the pale lager, extremely light and served with a wedge of lime, it was refreshing and just what we needed. Then, came wheat beer — medium bodied with citrus and floral flavours, also a perfect thirst quencher. Next, was Red Ale, our personal favourite, with a light caramel and fruity taste, followed by a delightful hint of bitterness in the end. The last sampler was their Signature Wheat India Pale Ale. Made from a blend of secret hops and caramel, the flavour is slightly bitter with a touch of sweetness.
The lunch buffet features primarily Indian food with other regular inclusions like a live pasta counter and soups. The range of starters includes the Andhra fried chicken, tandoori mix kebab, Kashmiri tikka and chilli paneer. The Andhra fried chicken was spot on, crisp on the outside, juicy and bursting with flavour on the inside, while the mixed kebabs were divine, melted in our mouths and perfectly seasoned. The chilli paneer too was just right and ticked all the boxes as did the tikka.
