Harrington Road is turning into a culinary haven. But first, a new farmers market
PARTY Avenue, an independent villa on Harrington Road that’s usually home to social soirees, will see a different clientele on March 6. It will host the first edition of the Woodside Farmers Market, which is an initiative to bring together farmers and consumers. Seasonal fruits and vegetables fresh from the farm, artisan cheese, hand-harvested honey and millet-based desserts are among what’s promised at the market, which will also feature fun carnival games to up the market mood.
Mohan Daniel, who runs an event company, is behind this initiative. “It has been my passion to establish a connect between the community and the farmers. We’re planning on making it a monthly event on the first Sunday of every month,” he explains. In its first edition, the market will feature 14 stalls, including Parmesan, Gouda, Young Cheese from Kodaikanal-based Caroselle Dairy Products, fresh and seasonal stock of fruits and vegetables from Farm Fresh Hand Picked in Cumbam, hand-harvested honey from Kodaikanal, red rice batter and the like from Namma Farm in Chennai. The market will also feature home-baked cakes and sausages, home-made pickles, theplas and khakras.
“While the fresh food market is gaining steam in areas like Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmyur, the Woodside Market hopes to cater to consumers in the neighbourhoods of Chetpet, Nungambakkam and Anna Nagar,” Daniel says. Other popular farmers markets in the city include the Organic Shandy between Wednesday and Friday in Luz, and the Tuesday and Saturday vegetable market at reStore in Kottivakkam.
