Head to the hills of Coorg for a weekend of high octane
eekends and vacations are no longer about being lazy and getting the best of all-you-can-eat buffets. Keeping up with the modern traveller and the adventurists, the second edition of Nurtilite’s Coorg Escapade 2015, gets bigger, more exciting and better than the 2014 version. And from a simple run through the forests, to a complete sports getaway, founder Carun Carumbiah, says this is only the beginning. “Being from Coorg and growing up on a property that has little streams, a beautiful vista, charming trails and a dreamy set-up, it seemed the right step towards promoting Coorg as the adventure capital of India,” begins Carumbiah, whose company Next Level Sports Entertainment, is the official organiser.
The Escapade brings a variety of activities like treks, runs, kayaking, cycling and even yoga sessions to serve as a warm up before the more intense sports. “Yes, people run on the streets and get a high, but running or trekking through the forest, passing gushing waterfalls and being enveloped in nature just takes it to the next level,” he explains, adding that while it is meant to be fun and relaxing, an element of healthy competition will be there, thanks to prize money for every event.
“It is an intense, high energy, fun and relaxing weekend, which will hopefully turn into a calendar event soon. We are expecting over 1,500 people at varied levels of fit
ness. So if your little tykes want to be part of the two-kilometre run, and you want to hike 10 kms, there’s something for everyone,” shares Carumbiah, pointing out that activities will be held around the Chelavara Falls, midway between Virajpet and Madikeri.
The Ultimate Trail Run will be the highlight, we hear, taking runners through waterfalls and coffee plantations. Then there is The Coorg Ascent, a unique cycling event, through the winding roads,” he tells us, elaborating that since safety is of utmost importance, they’ve procured permission to cordon off about 40 kilometres of highway road for the event. “This route will have three climbs and two technical sections with 70 per cent being off road,” he explains. If you’re looking for a less intense experience, perhaps the kayaking races on the Kakkabe river will do the trick, or even a trek up the highest peak of the Kodagu district – Tadiandamol. But if it’s a challenge you’re looking for, Carumbiah suggests the Warrior Of the Hills, which puts you in the line up for the 10K trail run, the cycling event and then a 100-metre speed kayaking race. “People like to challenge themselves. The Coorg Escapade aims to be the perfect combination of a vacation and your love for sports,” he tells us. Plus, medals with a rustic touch to bring out the essence of the outdoors concept, we say!
While the events kick off tomorrow, head over there this evening for the meet-and-greet session over a bon fire and fiery Coorg cuisine.
