Fashion designer Pria Kataaria Puri, known for her glamorous kaftans, could not have asked for a better debut on TV than Born Stylish. On the 30 minute show, she will interview film stars and international designers, with a focus on their style and fashion sensibilities.
Akshay Kumar will be her first guest. In the second half of the show that goes on air this Saturday, we’ll see French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier guiding us through style essentials. Anna Zegna of the Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna is also a part of the international line-up.
    Back story
Explaining the concept behind the show, Puri says, ‘‘Celebrities will speak about how their career and experiences in life have shaped them into style icons. They will also get candid about their fashion faux pas. It will be interesting for viewers to understand that everybody is not born stylish; that style is more about putting forward your personality than buying certain brands.” There is a bit of humour too, as noticed from the Akshay Kumar transcript. On the show, the action hero calls Katrina Kaif the ‘Indian Kim Kardashian’ and makes references to his wife’s exacting sartorial standards.
In the last two months, Puri has learnt interesting things about the celebs she has hosted. For instance, she says Akshay Kumar’s style quotient can be compared with footballer David Beckham’s. Sonakshi Sinha has been a student of fashion designing, so she likes to have fun with clothes. Anil Kapoor’s style is as vibrant as his personality. And Malaika Arora Khan used to look up to her younger sister Amrita for fashion tips.

    Old-school vibe
So who has shaped Puri’s fashion sense? ‘‘One of my earliest influences had been Indira Gandhi. I loved the way she dressed, and did her hair. My father noticed that she would change her watch every other day. Others will be princess Gayatri Devi and Audrey Hepburn. I am very old-school that way. My inspiration has always been women, their characters and lives,’’ says Puri, who wants to interview her style icon, singer Madonna, someday.
What clothes is Puri, who shuttles between her homes in Mumbai and Kuwait, most comfortable in? ‘‘I am a loungey kind of person. I like to wear a lot of silk lycra maxis. Since Mumbai is warm, I wear halter maxis here. In Kuwait, there is AC everywhere. So I cover up maxis with something,’’ says the jetsetter, who gets restless if she doesn’t travel frequently. She has been in Mumbai for two long months, shooting for the show, and can’t wait to fly to Kuwait and the US for the New Year’s get-together with her family.
But before that, she leaves us with pointers for the party season. ‘‘Wear colours like red, emerald green, electric blue and white. Look for gowns with sleeves, deep V necks and the ones that are high-waisted. This is quite bohemian and the boho-chic style is in vogue,” says Puri, who’s contemplating the launch of a perfume brand soon.
