Rao is the newest face on TV, and actor Amrita Rao’s sister to boot. A film journalist—who wrote columns for Asian Age and Mumbai Mirror—she turned actor with Tamil and Telugu movies. She’s now made her TV debut with the new serial on Colors, ‘Beintehaa’.
How did the transition from journalism to acting happen?
I started off as a model. After working with over 45 brands—including a chocolate commercial with Amitabh Bachchan—I switched to film journalism. Acting happened when director K Manigandan spotted my picture in a column and offered me a role with actor Arya. However, acting is a small part of my life. I hope to become a writer someday.
Why did you move to TV?
After I took a break from South Indian films—to do a course in broadcast journalism—I came back to Mumbai. I met with some prominent production houses and accepted Beintehaa because the story and concept appealed to me.
Tell us a little about your character.
Alia is a tomboy. I do not relate to her much.
Being Amrita Rao’s sister, do people draw comparisons?
It is very human to compare two siblings. Amrita has been a big source of inspiration to me and I discuss my work with her.
Beintehaa premiered on Colors on December 30. It airs, Mondays through Fridays, at 9 pm.
