Vidhi Kundan Jain, the cultural and creative head at The Humming Tree, remembers identifying with her favourite character, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, as a kid. “This year is his 100th birth anniversary, and we thought we would put together a reading and dramatisation of his works,” begins Jain, who like Matilda, always had an affinity for reading. The sixth edition of Books & Brews (a periodic event covering literature and culture) is tilted ‘Roald Dahl’s Centenary Eve Celebration with NCPA, Mumbai.’ A renowned British novelist and short story writer, with prominent works such as, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and Chocolate Factory, his works, spanning both fiction for adults and kids is what makes the man immensely popular. “He is a master of his craft. I love how he can say things without being explicit,” says Jain, who will also be performer at the event with four others.
The other performers are actors Sahil Saluja, Ashish Choudhary, Devi Gianetti and Dr Akash Khurana, the artistic advisor to the NCPA Repertory Theatre and a well known name in Indian theatre. “I did not read Dahl as a kid but discovered him later. That’s the idea. It’s never too late to get into it,” Khurana tells us. He will be be presenting dramatised readings of Some Revolting Rhymes, Two Tales of the Unexpected and excerpts from Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Humming Tree will also have a pop-up book shop of Dahl’s books, and a customisable chocolate shop for the kids. You can even pick up Wonka’s golden ticket bookmarks.
As Dahl put it, “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
