Director Ajay Bhuyan about rom-com with a twist and Vir Das
Though an alumnus of IIT and IIM, Ajay Bhuyan had only one dream: to make movies. He worked in a corporate job in Singapore for two years—just long enough to finance his film course at the New York University. After working as an assistant on Hollywood film Inside Man (he took care of costumes) and directing Telugu films like Dhadha and Houseful, the Hyderabad native is directing his first Hindi film, Amit Sahni Ki List, with actor Vir Das. More from the director:
The movie is about a list of things Vir Das is looking for in a girl. Even minor details like how the girl should like Sachin Tendulkar and Pink Floyd. It is a very coming-of-age story and he plays the role of an investment banker. I first saw him during a performance of History Of India – VIRitten and I immediately incorporated him in the role. I have given his role a Woody Allen treatment.
I am not a big fan of rom-coms, but when I read the script I realised that the rom-com has been given a different twist in it. The movie has a guy’s take on romance and has an intellectual quotient, something I like. I am also a big fan of thrillers.
I do not have a back-up plan. I left everything to make films and I do not think I can do anything else. As a director, I think my visuals will stand out and the look of the film will be rich. Amit Sahni Ki List is scheduled to release on July 18.
