Gayatri Chopra talks about her clutches that feature fabrics, sequins and more
Creativity comes easily to accessory designer Gayatri Chopra. The NIFT (Hyderabad) and New Academy of Fine Arts (Milan, Italy) trained designer says, “I keep trying to reinvent myself and create new designs for my box clutches.” The Delhi girl’s eponymous line of accessories has acquired many takers especially for her trendy boxes since its inception in March 2009. “I started my brand with big leather bags. But six months later, when I introduced evening purses to the line, I realised there was a huge craze for these little fashion boxes,” she shares. The designer, 28, says she takes inspiration from daily life. “I see a piece of fabric lying around and I want to do something with it.”
Born and raised in the capital, Chopra pays homage to both her Punjabi roots and her cosmopolitan city. Her line of evening boxes stands apart with her use of vibrant Indian weaves, including handloom ikat and raw silk, and distinctive embellishment. Describing her box clutches as having “many avatars,” the designer features patchwork, sequins, embroidery, brooches, ghungroos, chains and more. “I am not a big fan of leather or crystal box clutches,” she confesses when asked if she took inspiration from acclaimed brands such as Judith Leiber. Like most bag ladies, though, she admits to having favourites. “I do like Chanel for their handbags,” she says.
Chopra, who built up her brand by exhibiting across the country, is now available both online through websites like Chiclique and Fabulloso and at select stores in Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Her newest collection of box clutches will see splashes of neon and zari embroidery. On her future plans, she says she would love to work with lights. “And may be someday create lighting installations. They would be just as funky as my bags,” she grins.
