Gallery G brings together three renowned artists for July Lights

One of the city’s most exclusive art galleries, Gallery G, teams up with Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai for July Lights, a collection of new paintings by Ashok Bhowmick, Asit Kumar Patnaik, and HR Das. July lights, an old Mumbai term referring to monsoon lights that light up a rainy day, forms the central theme of the exhibition.

While Patnaik’s paintings are semi-realistic, revolving around the human psyche, Bhowmick’s narratives explore the political climate of West Bengal, and Das gives equal importance to the background of his paintings as the main subject itself. Bhowmick manipulates the rendering of his images, to make living objects to appear frozen and breathing life into lifeless elements.

Patnaik is acclaimed for his series, Relations, that feature a semi-clad male and female figure in various postures. Das is best known for his bulls that he captures so beautifully, showcasing the energy and spirit of the animal, that is so central to Indian culture. “These artists have been chosen for the variety they bring to the table. It’s a blend of the Spartan, figurative, strong and energetic,” says Gitanjali Maini, curator.

Apart from the paintings, the focus will also be on the Kochi Muziris Biennale 2014 to be held in December. Art connoisseurs will be shown a presentation on the prestigious event by Bose Krishnamachari, the president, and Riyas Komu, the general secretary of the Kochi Biennale Foundation, with an aim to increase the number of visitors.

Until July 31. Rs. 85,000 upwards. At Taj West End, Race Course Road. Details: 66605660
