Singers are often not happy just exercising their vocal chords; they want to try out their acting chops, too. Here’s what the new crop is up to
From legends like Madonna and Michael Jackson to others like Jennifer Hudson — when singers act, the world takes notice. Our pick includes some surprising choices and a few usual suspects.
While the debate rages on about whether Leto will pass the test as Joker in the Suicide Squad, Josh Boone (director of The Fault in Our Stars) announced earlier this month that the singer will play the role of Lestat in the reboot of the 1994 (Tom Cruise-starrer) Interview with the Vampire. Although the author of the original novel, Anne Rice, does not seem to be impressed by the casting, fans are excited. As well they should be—after all, we know how far he can go to stay true to his characters (remember Dallas Buyers Club?)
Usher starring in a biographical boxing movie alongside Raging Bull star Robert De Niro? Sounds too good to be true. The Good Kisser singer has hit the jackpot with the role of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, where he will match punches with Edgar Ramirez (of Zero Dark Thirty fame) who plays the protagonist, Roberto Duran. De Niro will be seen as Ray Arcel, in a Stallone-like role (think Creed) as Duran’s trainer. Releasing this August, Hands of Stone premiered this year at Cannes.
Former Destiny’s Child singer, LeToya Luckett, is charting her own destiny after landing the stellar role of legendary American singer, Dionne Warwick, in the upcoming biopic about the latter, Dionne. She will be seen alongside none other than Bad Romance girl Lady Gaga, who will play the role of late British singer Cilla Black. Black was involved in a spat with Warwick, who alleged that the former stole her music. We will have to wait till next year for the drama to unfold on screen.
When the One Direction singer Instagrammed a picture of his shorn locks, no one guessed that it was more than a new summer do. Later it was confirmed that the 22-year-old would play the lead in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, a World War 2 movie releasing next July. The last few days have seen even more pictures of his new look surface on the internet, whipping fans into a frenzy. It remains to be seen how he can match up to the likes of his co-stars, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance.
Two years after she made it to the Billboards for the first time—with her 2014 hit, Shower—Becky G is all set for her Hollywood debut. When the classic TV series, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, is reborn on the big screen with the same name, watch out for the 19-year-old American pop-rap singer who has been cast as Trini/Yellow Ranger. Directed by Dean Israelite, the movie is set to release next March.
Snoop Dogg appears in a cameo alongside Adam Levine, Carrie Underwood and other singers in the upcoming mockumentary comedy, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
While Anna Kendrick reprises her role of Beca in Pitch Perfect 3, rapper Ludacris will join Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in the new Fast and
Furious movie, to release next year.
