Unwind under Arabian huts at the no-fuss Friendz Cafe
Friendz Cafe, for those who haven’t heard, is a new hangout in Kilpauk. The cafe was launched by Chintu Mahbubani (who owns the Tandoori Tadka next door) with three other partners, last week. Mahbubani places an emphasis on pastries, sandwiches, pastas, pizzas, wraps and mocktails at the vegetarian cafe that has specials for the Jain community as well.
“All our pastries are eggless. Instead, we use supplements like butter and Milkmaid,” says Mahbubani, also the chef here. From their elaborate menu, we try their wheat wrap that comes with a filling of paneer and vegetables in a tangy sauce. We also try the spinach and corn sandwich made with homemade cheese. Mahbubani recommends their lemony Calamansi Surprise (with watermelon, cranberry, lime juice, soda, ice cream and pieces of strawberry) to wash it down. The Irish coffee is thick and refreshing. “Our beans are from Bangalore,” he explains.
Tucked in a corner, is a stand with five varieties of bread — wheat, multi-grain, sandwich, white and parmesan. While the interiors are simple and cozy for conversation, they have Arabian huts outside. “The huts are for couples and those who want to have a corporate meeting over a cup of coffee. When you leave the premises, you can write what you want on the graffiti wall,” says Usha Melwani, Mehbubani’s wife, who enjoys making cookies and muffins. Friendz Cafe also has happy hours and combos.
