With the ferocity of the monsoons abating, thereas no time like now to pull out that safari jacket, dust off your binoculars, and sign up for some adventure at the numerous wildlife parks that dot the country.
We spoke to Taj Safarias wildlife specialist, Ratna Singh, who gave us a round up of Amust-visit national parks, insider tips and valuable pointers for a great safari break.

      Pench, Madhya Pradesh
Nestled between the Satpura range and the Pench river, the Pench National Park stirs up images of Mowgli, Bagheera and Baloo prancing through the dry deciduous forests. While less popular than its neighbour, Bandha-vagarh, the park boasts hills, forests and plenty of rivulets. Singh says that apart from the landscape, you can look foward to endangered species of animals and birds. Twenty-five tigers apparently share the space with other cats like the leopard, as well as wolves, dhol (Indian wild dog), hyenas, chital, sambhar and gaur. Birdwatchers can revel in sighting a host of majestic birds including the crested serpent eagle and white-eyed buzzard.

      Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand
Set up in 1936 to protect the Bengal tiger, this one is the oldest in the country and Singh advises you go there simply because the name Jim Corbett itself means so much. a?Youare likely to see tigers, leopards, elephants and many primates here,a? she says, adding that it is also a haven for birds, a?from the usual peacock, jungle foul and dove to the Asian paradise flycatcher and Indian Alpine swift.a? Those interested will also love spotting the Indian crocodile and snakes like Krait cobra and Russels viper.

      Ranthambore, Rajasthan
Formerly a princely game conserve, this is the ideal spot if you are looking to see tigers. At the convergence of the Aravalis and the Vindhyas, youall find varied landscape that shifts from gentle hills to steep climbs, interspersed with green plateaus a which can be credited for the diversity in wildlife and flora. a?Make sure to also visit the old Ranthambhor Fort (built in the 10th century) to get a better view of leopards, hyenas, crocodiles and boar because most of the surrounding water bodies are visible from the height of the fort. The fort itself offers history buffs a grand experience through arches of time and architecture,a? says Singh.

      Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh
What is striking about this place is the diversity it has to offer wildlife enthusiasts, combined with breathtaking natural splendour. Apart from tigers, the park is also inhabited by exotic species like gaur, black deer, black buck and leopard. The animal that represents the park is the barasingha or the swamp deer, which was on the verge of extinction two decades ago. But quick and effective measures have increased their population. A spot you must not miss is the Bamni Dadar, or Sunset Point, from where you get a stunning view of the sambhars and gaurs grazing, backlit by the setting sun.

      Panna National Park, AMadhya Pradesh
Another tiger reserve, this park has turned its tiger conservation project into a success story. With just five tigers in 2008, it now boasts a total of 30. Also look out for hyenas, wolves, nilgais and chinkaras. The heritage of the Khajuraho temple in close proximity makes this one a great destination, as itas got a good mix of culture, adventure and wildlife.

      Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh
a?This is a park I adore, as it was practically in my backyard while growing up,a? says Singh. Located in the Vindyas, this one is a mix of steep ridges, open meadows, and lush green forests. The former hunting ground of the maharaja of Rewa, it is home to the exotic white tiger. It is also inhabited by other carnivores like the Asiatic jackal, Bengal fox, ratel and jungle cats.

Datchigam National Park, Jammu & Kashmir
Located in the Zabarwan range in the western Himalayas, the park is at an altitude ranging from 5,500 to 14,000 feet above sea level, which is conducive to an array of rare species. The hangal or Kashmir stag is one such species that can be found here. Other occupants include the musk deer, Himalayan serow, hill fox, yellow throated marten and otter. If youare big on bird watching, donat miss the Himalayan monal, pygmy owlet, redstart, wagtail and koklass pheasant.

Quick eats and finger food are in Aplentiful supply. Try the spicy chicken wings which come lathered in a tomato-based, lemongrass infused sauce, and are delicious dipped into the accompanying garlic dip. The Russian salad is great for a quick snack, and the non-vegetarian version comes with lightly poached chicken as well as the usual roasted potatoes, fresh green peas and mayonnaise dressing.

        Spoiled for choice
For more substantial eats, there are burgers, hot sandwiches and European fare including sausages, fish and chips and chili con carne. Crunchy French bread, succulent meat, slowly caramalised onions and melted cheddar cheese came together to create one of the tastiest steak sandwiches weave had the pleasure of eating. Fresh basa, lightly battered in seasoned bread crumbs made for tasty fish and chips, but wead have preferred the batter to be a little crisper. Vegetarians are also well-catered for with a grilled mixed vegetable steak, and a cottage cheese and corn burger, topped with a smoky barbecue sauce. ARs.A600 for two. Details: 41152678

Good times on tap in Brigade Roadas new bar-diner

Brigade Road may have more than its fair share of pubs, but the newly launched Tap Water has already made its mark. Set in an unassuming basement property, its simple, rugged dAcor and a?drinking holea vibe belies the gastro-pub menu devised by chef Nirmal Kumar, that sets it a cut above the rest.

              Drink it up
We were intrigued by the concept of self-service, unlimited beer on tap. Grab one of the three large a?partya tables, and help yourself to either Kingfisher or Fosters from the large, industrial-looking tap installed above your head. For a set price (which varies by brand) per person, the beer will flow for an entire hour. The signature house cocktails donat disappoint either. Our Long Tap Ice Tea was a twist on the classic LIIT, with egg white adding extra body to the drink.

              Gastronomy haven
The bar menu offers American-style Acomfort food, with 15-inch thin crust pizzas, a full range of burgers and steaks, and an extensive selection of sandwiches and melts. We were particularly impressed with the finger food: the freshly battered calamari served with a creamy pepper, garlic, cheese and onion dipping sauce makes for an excellent sharing platter, while the roasted, honey-glazed spare ribs literally fall of the bone. To round off the evening we recommend the mango panna cotta a a perfect desi twist on the classic Italian dessert.

Two new first person survival games to keep you sharp and tacticalA

                Alien: Isolation
A survival horror, set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger, this one looks eerie but exciting. Set fifteen years after the events of Alien, Ellen Ripleyas daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her motheras disappearance. You play Amanda and have to navigate through an increasingly volatile world. The atmosphere keeps changing and aliens are more unpredictable than you can imagine. We love that the game doesnat follow a half-baked plot but builds as you play, thanks to artificial intelligence senses that allow gameplay to be based on the gameras psyche. So luckily no computerised movement of the enemies either! Largely underpowered and under prepared because you are really defenseless save for a flame thrower, scavenging for ammunition is also part of the plan apart from succeeding to stay alive! Releases on October 7 for PC, PS3, Xbox360, PS4, and Xbox One.

                Destiny
From the creators of Halo and the publisher of Call of Duty comes Destiny. With an unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay, it delivers an incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe. You are a Guardian charged with saving the last city on Earth with the option of personalising your look and you can pick your combination of armor, weapons. As you pass quests you gain power and get hold of rare and exotic gear. Strike raids are very hard though and this may discourage some players from carrying on. While it is a great shooting game, it does get repetitive if you are playing alone as the enemy spawns at the exact same location every time you re-play the game. On PS4 and Xbox One
