One thing is for sure, this city is madly in love. A few days back, I tuned into Radio City after 9 pm and experienced a show that is probably one-of-a-kind on the air waves. Called Love Guru, it is hosted by RJ Rajavel and is a marathon on-air as it winds up at 1 am. The love angle is a delicate one to handle, as each one of us has varied thoughts and opinions on relationships. It takes some doing to find middle ground and communicate sensibly to the listener.
From what I heard and understood, the show was not about how to fall in love (thank God for that), but rather about maintaining healthy relationships. The soundscape is neatly demarcated during the four hoursathe first two hours dedicated to interactions with listeners on topics about love and relationships; a story section takes up the third hour; and the show makes it to the finish line with emails and SMSes from listeners, sprinkled with the love guruas advice.
There is an interesting movement happening off-air, too, thanks to the showaall about sharing, giving and helping. Listeners have taken a front seat on this by raising fees for blind students, helping out at blood donation camps, and rehabilitating those who have tried committing suicide. The show has saved close to a hundred individuals from committing the act.
Now letasA get down to the numbers: if you have an aching love issue or want advice on relationships, then call 18001234650 and love guru will sort you out. The toll free number was created because of the huge response the show attracted and Love Guru has received a whopping four lakh calls and counting, till date. Thatas a massive number to achieve in a short span of time. Romance and retro are surely the most wanted on the listener wish list and Radio City is giving them exactly that. See you next week!

If last year saw the emergence of new talent on and off screen and enthusiastically embraced new independent voices, 2014 remains disappointingly ambivalent. There were a few blockbuster hits (Kick, Happy New Year, Bang Bang), a few disasters (Humshakals, Action Jackson) and a few that captured the collective imagination and touched a chord with critics and audiences alike (Mary Kom, Queen, Haider).

Here is my list of 12 films (in random order) that made me smile, cry, marvel, rejoice or simply admire the writers, actors, editors, directors, singers and producers that embellish the fabric of Bollywood everyday. The films that almost made it: Happy New Year, Mardaani, Fireflies and
              Bobby Jasoos.

(Please note: This list was compiled before the release of Anurag Kashyapas Ugly).

PK: Raj Kumar Hirani proves again that he is a master storyteller as he directs Aamir Khan as an alien trying to understand the complexities of earth and the distinction between faith and religion. Satirical, humorous and poignant.

haiderHaider: Vishal Bhardwaj completed his Shakespeare trilogy with this adaptation of Hamlet, starring Shahid Kapoor. Bhardwaj creates a unique world, including the layered character of Ghazala, played by Tabu.

Children of War: Mrityunjay Devvrat goes back to nine months prior to the formation of Bangla-desh. A gutsy, compelling reimagining of the horrors of war, it chronicles a very important chapter in the history of sub-continent.

              Lakshmi: Nagesh Kukunoor
spotlights critical issues such as child trafficking by basing his no-holds-barred film on the true story of 13-year-old Lakshmi, sold by her father to a pimp.

Miss Lovely: Ashim Ahluwaliaas visceral treat is set against the backdrop of the 1980s C-grade film industry where this story of sibling rivalry, romance and crime unfolds.

Hawaa-Hawaai-Movie-2014-ImagesHawaa Hawaai: Amole Gupteas film is a thoughtful, delightful, charming and optimistic underdog story set in a sports arena. A chai stall child worker takes up inline skating and sets his sights on the trophy.

Finding Fanny: Homi Adajaniaas dysfunctional Goan characters embark on a quest to find Fanny. A heart-warming story about second chances with stand-out performances by Pankaj Kapur, Deepika Padukone and Dimple Kapadia.

Queen: Vikas Bahlas Rani captivated audiences as she took off on a solitary honeymoon to Europe, after being jilted. Kangana Ranautas vulnerable side is juxtaposed with Lisa Haydonas carefree attitude in this coming of age film.

Mary Kom: Omung Kumar directed Priyanka Chopra in and out of the boxing ring as she embraced the role of world champion pugilist, Mary Kom. The underdog story of determination, willpower and talent was a complete knockout.

city lightsCitylights: Hansal Mehtaas official remake of Metro Manila explores how the pursuit of a dream can lead you to a dangerous place. Rajkummar Rao, Manav Kaul and Patralekhaa bring alive their characters. The songs are winners too.

Dekh Tamasha Dekh: Feroz Abbas Khan takes a true story set in a small town and uses satire, wit and humour to weave in complex and layered comments about the absurdity of Indian society.

Sulemani Keeda: Amit Masurkaras slacker comedy is a refreshing and amusing satire on the world of struggling writers. Well acted and equally well written, its youthful irreverence is entertaining.

              PK
              Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Cast: Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt
When a stranger arrives in the city, he quickly gains a reputation for startling innocence. But the questions that the mysterious PK (Khan) asks forces people to re-think their long-held assumptions, gaining him both fast friends and steadfast enemies. A story that ultimately boils down to the friendship between Jaggu (Sharma) and PK, this is a gentle movie that lives up to expectations without being over showy.

But their relationship takes a complicated turn when the police and an international don are on the lookout for professional assassin AJ, who looks like Vishi. Poor direction and mixed plot makes for a movie that fails to entertain.

Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Smaug rises again and then screens are engulfed in smoke, blood and gore. While Bilbo (Freeman) is seen fighting for his life, only Gandalf (McKellen) sees Sauron rising too. Phenomenal effects, action and a hint of emotion, make this one the best of the series.

                  Director: Prabhudheva
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam
Romance blossoms between small-time crook Vishi (Devgn), and HR executive Khushi (Sinha). But their relationship takes a complicated turn when the police and an international don are on the lookout for professional assassin AJ, who looks like Vishi. Poor direction and mixed plot makes for a movie that fails to entertain.

                  Director: Peter Jackson
Cast: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom
Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Smaug rises again and then screens are engulfed in smoke, blood and gore. While Bilbo (Freeman) is seen fighting for his life, only Gandalf (McKellen) sees Sauron rising too. Phenomenal effects, action and a hint of emotion, make this one the best of the series.

                    Raju ban gaya name guru

Would you have watched PK had the film been called Hey Bhagwaan or letas say Badey Kaanwaala? The fanboy in you would have still headed to the multiplex, but I am willing to bet my last paisa that your level of interest would have been a lot less. Clearly, Rajkumar Hirani knows a thing or two about names. His titles are always character centric but like any income tax return, it hides more than it reveals. Munna Bhai MBBS gives no inkling of jaadu ki jhappi. Lage Raho gives no clue of Gandhigiri and 3 Idiots doesnat feel at all like a satire on the Indian education system.
That said, the choice of PK was partly fortuitous as Raju Hirani had originally planned to name it Talli or more specifically Ek Tha Talli. The release of Ek Tha Tiger forced a rethink and he chose PK over Talli. Maybe because Talli creates a misimpression that the film is about an alcoholic, while PK can pass off as a nickname or the initials of a person.
Even with character names, no one has come up with quirkier ones than Raju. The lead character of Chetan Bhagatas Five Point Someone was Ryan Oberoi. Any lesser director adapting the story would have faithfully stuck to Ryan. But Mr Hirani is not your average auteur. He picked Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad instead. The other alias for Aamir in the movie was Phunsukh Wangdu. In another era, Ranchoddas would have been the heroas dad and Phunsukh possibly a Nepali sidekick. To select un-heroic monikers for heroes requires chutzpah. And Raju saab has plenty of it.
His desire to stay away from the same old Vijay, Rahul and Raj has led the genial director to the doorsteps of the unusual. Anushka plays the role of Jagat Janani urf Jaggu in PK. I canat recollect a single Hindi movie heroine bestowed with such loopiness.
The minor characters in the Hirani ensemble are always a delight. If Circuit and Short Circuit had the audience in splits in Munnabhai, Centimeter and Millimeter took the cake in 3 Idiots. Thankfully, heas not repeated the trick in PK. And that only means a?all izz wella!
