Find the best photo ops on Pondy’s streets from the seat of a vintage bicycle

FROM an old rickshaw resting against a grey wall, a bright red door of a heritage home to a colonial villa with wooden balconies — Pondicherry’s boulevards have always been a trove of picturesque snapshots. But can you cover the city’s iconic spots and find lesser-known but postcard-worthy pictures on a short weekend break?
Pondy Cycle Tour that offers an early morning tour to discover the city before it wakes up, has a new tour this season. The Afternoon Photo Tour is tailored for shutterbugs who want to better their lense work while exploring the heritage streets of Pondy. Adding to the charm, are vintage bicycles customised with leather seats and bells painted with Indian motifs. “The four-hour tour is meant for beginners in photography and will combine technical expertise with a sense of history of the city,” says Fiona Guerra, of Pondy Cycle Tour.
The tour will give amateurs an intimate feel of Pondicherry’s streets, feels the tour guide Gopinath Ram, also a professional photographer. “Pondicherry is a good place for beginners in photography— wherever you turn there is something to shoot.” While a DSLR or Bridge camera is ideal, even a point and shoot will do, as emphasis will be on framing shots, with plenty of tips and technical inputs thrown in.
While exploring the Tamil and French quarters, participants also get to visit less touristy areas like Rue Mullah and Rue Cazy in the quieter yet vibrant Muslim quarter. A fancy tea break with French pastries at La Maison Rose will also double as a feedback session and an exercise workshop, a mansion visit and a fun surprise are part of the tour, priced at `2,000 per person.
On Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for two to eight participants, from 3 pm to 7 pm.

The team behind the Pondy Cycle Tour and Wake Up Pondy present gourmet offerings for both tourists and residents

HAVE a quick visit planned to Pondicherry with no idea where to find the city’s signature French-influenced cuisine? The about-to-be-launched Gourmet Food Walk may be the solution for visitors looking for a special introduction to Pondicherry’s French gastronomical influences. “Most visitors coming to Pondicherry know that they can find good food here,” says Fiona Guerra, the tour’s creator, along with her partner Idriss Madir, “but they have no real idea about French gastronomy—or where to find really good French and Creole cuisine. Many places serve French food—but not all are good ones!” The Gourmet Food walk guides visitors through a three-hour dining experience with the help of the dynamic Julien, a local Pondicherry resident, who is full of stories and experiences of the city’s culinary and night-life.

    In Creole kitchens
Guerra and Madir had also launched the Pondy Cycle Tour a year-and-half ago, to give curious visitors culturally grounded, authentic experiences of the city and its many unique buildings and neighbourhoods. The Gourmet Food Walk builds on the success of the cycle tour, but takes visitors inside the world of Creole cuisine on foot this time. Modelled on gourmet food tours found in cities like Lima or San Francisco, this food walk promises a unique laid-back dining experience with starters, a main course, cheese platter, dessert, and a signature beverage in each of four different iconic, heritage locations. “There are introductions to street food in cities like Mumbai,” Fiona continues, “but few by way of truly gourmet experiences of fine dining.” At each stop, there will be mezze platters and/or few dishes presented to showcase the mixing of French and Indian influences: for instance, coriander fish or the presentation of Auroville cheeses. At the moment, the tour is non-vegetarian in keeping with the spirit of French gastronomy, but more vegetarian options may be developed in the future, depending on visitor demand. “We steer clear of the typical multi-cuisine options,” says Guerra, “and in the process also hope to keep visitors away from big fast-food chains like KFC!” Those interested will have to take the tour to know more details, as the idea is to discover food in Pondicherry serendipitously. The tour will involve about a half hour of walking, and will end at Bharati park—where visitors can choose to ride a rickshaw or take a leisurely digestive walk by the beachfront promenade.

On Wednesdays through Sundays, by advance booking only. At `3,000 per person, including the full meal and guide (excluding alcohol). Details: 0413 4200718 (The food walk and the cycle tour, featured right, are organised by Sita Cultural Centre)

Hyderabad’s global citizens show you how it’s done at weddings with takeaways like gold-covered almonds, imported biscotti, even themed jaggery

It’s that time of the year when couples exchange sacred vows and guests come back home happy and well-fed. And when the guests reach their homes first thing that they dissect is wedding favours received from the hosts. These wedding favours are nothing but tokens of remembrance and appreciation that are enjoyed and cherished. Now what goes inside a wedding favour other than tiny Ganeshas in silver and valuable coins is quite important for many families and the wedding planners that are contacted for preparations of these return gifts. This trend was always there in its own traditional ways like boxes of laddoo and barfi but now a lot of customised sweets, gold-coated almonds, biscotti and imported chocolates are finding favour in the city. We talk to the top families of the city and people who are into designing. We ask them what works when it comes to these return gifts.

    Sweets from
    Kolkata & Mumbai
Anju Poddar orders little boxes of sweets that she gives as wedding favours along with exclusive boxes of bangles, saris etc. The Poddars source out sweets from Lovey Burman of Kookie Jar, Kolkata. “If we choose brownies then we order it from Theobroma, Mumbai that has brownies from Rs 65 onwards and sends orders via courier with additional charges. Other than that if we go the traditional way then we use decorated boxes for the sweets. The sweets are mostly dry so that if the guests are travelling these food items do not get stuck with each other.” City-based noted painter Jaya Baheti adds, “Silver-coated almonds are popular as wedding favours. But often in the wedding favour boxes we add one layer of these gold or silver coated almonds, another layer of sweets and then biscotti ordered mostly from abroad.” Cantuccini the almond biscotto is quite popular among the city folks as is chocolate biscotto. Gold and silver
    coated almonds
Dry fruits are offered to guests in Central Asia on festive and marriage occasions. Now, the folks of Hyderabad are picking these glittering nuts for wedding favours. These high-end gold and silver kernels from Dubai. Says city-based socialite Anju Poddar, “For weddings in our families we pack silver coated almonds in the packets. We source it from Middle East especially Dubai.”

    Jaggery statuettes
Another socialite and wedding planner Shashi Nahata based at the city tells us, “For my 25th wedding anniversary I got jaggery shaped as bride and bridegroom. I gave a jar of honey along with it in a cute decorated jute bag.” She also informs us that a lot of people in the city are going for dried fruits as part of their calories count. They want even their guests to be on their guard hence this choice. “I source it out for my clients from Dubai. The favourite flavours of clients are dry strawberry, dry banana and dry kiwis.” She adds that one such wedding favour box or bag can cost up to Rs 10,000. Details: 81210 46076

    Baadam Kii Jaali
Some families in the city go for Baadam Kii Jaali, a sweet made from almonds and sugar powder that have a lattice design and are available at the Park Hyatt at special request. “I sometimes use Baadam Kii Jaali for the wedding favour.” Other than this, her pick is Pootharekhulu the thin flaky sweet dusted with sugar powder that just melts in your mouth. She personally oversees the packings and reveals, “For every occasion there are different boxes and items. Telling the exact price of the same is difficult. ” The boxes or baskets used to pack these favours are in bright colours like turquoise, violet, cherry-red, sunflower-yellow and these are packed with golden, green ribbons. Anju Poddar sources her baskets from Chennai-based NGO Manjal as she likes their designs. Details: 4949 1234

    Healthy tidbits
Many others in the city are giving organic biscuits, cookies and bottles of honey in the decorative packets or boxes. Says event manager Ravi Aggarwal, “I get a lot of orders for organic stuff. People even ask for ragi sweets and cakes. My favourite pick is Light Green Oven of Hyderabad as you get amazing stocks of organic food items. Our clients are top corporates who are catching up with the health awareness.” Such packets start from ` 1,000 and go up to 5,000. Depending on the occasion more stuff like dry fruits, silver coins and cardamoms are added. Details: 93910 46862

A store opening and  some  weekend shopping  were  highlights  of the week

The week opened with a store opening. Arti Hora and Inder Pal Hora launched their first Lock & Decor showroom around six years back in Siddiamber Bazaar, Hyderabad. On Sunday, they went one step further to launch their second showroom in Banjara Hills, Road number 12. It‘s an offshoot of Sheel Security Products launched by Tilak Raj Hora in 1968. Hyderabadis young and old enjoyed a leisurely Sunday lunch while admiring the hardware turned to pieces of art.
Last Saturday, Akritti Elite Exhibition & Sale put up designer sarees, lehengas, jewellery and more. Over 60 designers put up their ware. Transparent stoles that could double as voni (half sarees) seemed like a hot pick. Of course, we had the top shoppers not just shopping but preening their designer wear too.
Hyderabad loves shopping. Who says a shopping exhibition should open only on a weekend? Early this week, Desire exhibition opened at Hitex. It was about gorgeous outfits, shoes, bags, curios, gifts and more.

Known for their Gallic charm and acting chops, these actors continue to make an impression in Hollywood

      Bérénice Marlohe
The James Bond franchise is definitely a good launching pad for foreign actresses. French television star Bérénice Marlohe drew attention to herself when she played the sultry Severin in the 23rd Bond film Skyfall (2012). Subsequently, she starred in the 2015 film 5 to 7. Up next is Terrence Malik’s untitled musical drama, where she will be seen alongside Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman.
This film is due to release in 2016.

      Eva Green
Eva Green, 35, is best remembered for her role as Vesper, James Bond’s love interest in Casino Royale. And while she’s currently being talked about for her role in the television series Penny Dreadful, the one film we’re all waiting for is Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, starring Green, Asa Butterfield, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench and Samuel L Jackson. And though we’ll have to wait till the end of 2016 for the film, a Burton film means a treat is in store.

      Marion Cotillard
In the gaming community, 40-year-old French actress Marion Cotillard is soon going to become a household name. After her roles in Inception, Midnight in Paris, Contagion, and a part in The Dark Knight Rises, all eyes are on her next film, Assassin’s Creed, that releases in 2016. Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film also stars Michael Fassbender, Michael K Williams, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson. It is based on the video game of the same name.

      Vincent Cassel
He’s probably one of the most famous French actors in Hollywood. And while he was last talked about in 2010 for his role as Thomas Leroy in Black Swan, the 49-year-old actor is set to grab attention all over again in the 2016-spy thriller that will bring Jason Bourne back on screen. The fifth film in the series, which is being directed by Paul Greengrass, and stars Matt Damon, is still untitled. But we do know that Cassel plays the bad guy in it. Cassel and Monica Bellucci ended their marriage of 14 years, two years ago, but it was only in a recent interview that Bellucci said that she feels liberated after having separated from Cassel. Meanwhile, Cassel’s latest Partisan, a dystopian fable, hasn’t fared too well with critics.

      Omar Sy
His French film Intouchables was a runaway hit, grossing over $426 million. And that probably led him to land his first Hollywood project, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The actor, who had lent his voice for a sheep in Brother Bear, was also seen in Jurassic World, and the more recent Burnt, with Bradley Cooper, and Our Brand is Crisis, starring Susan Sarandon. The 37-year-old French actor and comedian will be seen in 2016, in Dan Brown’s Inferno directed by Ron Howard. The film also stars Tom Hanks (as Robert Langdon) and Felicity Jones.

        Tale of 10
A 50-year-old feud between two villages—where section 144 of the constitution has been imposed—forms the crux of the plot in 144. “It’s also about 10 characters, each focussed on their own goals, and how their lives converge at a point,” informs debutant director Manikandan G. The film that released today, has Mirchi Shiva, Ashok Selvan, Oviya and Shruti Ramakrishnan in the cast. The thriller, with a generous dose of humour,
        seems like an ideal
        family entertainer.

        Simran is back
Having directed a couple of Kannada films, JKS (aka Jagdeesh) debuts on the Tamil screen with Karai Oram. The trilingual (Tamil, Kannada, Telugu) that released today, is a romantic thriller set in a beach house. The cast includes Nikesha Patel, Iniya and Simran, the latter essaying the role of a cop. Heaping praise on Simran’s dedication, JKS recalls, “There was a difficult fight scene at the end. But Simran performed it admirably, refusing to use a double.” It seems like the actress is back in form for her second innings.

        Notes from a journey
Nandita is excited about her weekend release, Uppu Karuvadu. “I was thrilled when I was approached for the film. I’ve always wanted to work with director Radha Mohan who gives women substantial roles,” says the actress. The film chronicles the journey of two people, the other played by actor Karunakaran. Nandita sports two different looks—one is childish and stubborn, while the other is poised and mature. Nandita calls the experience a “beautiful journey from beginning to the end.”

        Dapper does it
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who held his own with Salman Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Varun Dhawan in Badlapur, is all set to play a golfer in Sohail Khan’s next. Though he has the sophisticated investigative officer in Kahaani under his belt, Siddiqui has mostly excelled in playing rebels from the under-privileged class. Meanwhile, Khan is on the lookout for a “tall, sexy and desirable” heroine. He initially approached Amy Jackson, who begged off using dates as an excuse, and the second choice is Sunny Leone. Last heard, Leone—who isn’t doing too well for herself as a leading lady—was “seriously considering” the offer. We also heard that Siddiqui will be undergoing training in golf for the sports drama.

        SRKBuilding his fanbase
Shah Rukh Khan is unable to get over the experience of shooting for his upcoming thriller, Fan. “Some films you never want to end. Making Fan has been that emotion. It’s sad that all good things have to end too… Like life, love and laughter,” Khan tweeted recently. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film, slated to release on April 15 next year, features the actor as Gaurav Chanana, the biggest fan of superstar Aryan Khanna (also essayed by SRK). The film also marks the debut of star kid Shriya Pilgaonkar, daughter of film and television actor Sachin Pilgaonkar and actress Supriya. She will star opposite Gaurav’s character. Sachin, who is thrilled his daughter got such a great learning experience, says, “I am very happy for her. It is not a full-fledged role; it is a cameo. She asked me if she should do the film and I gave her full support.” Produced by Yash Raj Films, Fan also stars Waluscha De Sousa and Yogendra Tiku.

        Stunts, Sonakshi & sequels
Director Abhinay Deo is excited about Force 2, starring John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha. “Sonakshi is shoulder-to-shoulder with John Abraham. We have started shooting the action part with her and almost 50 per cent is done,” says the director. Tahir Raj Bhasin (Mardaani fame) will be replacing Vidyut Jammwal (who was the villain in Force) in this one. Abhinay is directing a film after a gap of four years. “I always take time for my projects. After Delhi Belly, I took two years for my next project, 24,” says the director, who has taken on the TV show and has dedicated time to it as he wants to do “something different and path-breaking”. He is also planning to team up with writer Akshat Verma for a sequel to Delhi Belly. The 2011 hit, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, had Imran Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Vir Das, Poorna Jagannathan and Shenaz Treasurywala in the lead.

        Hrithik 2Epic to action
Hrithik Roshan is currently shooting the epic love story Mohenjo Daro. But we hear he’s already signed
        on his next with Kabir
Khan. Though details are unavailable, the film (rumoured to be an action thriller) will in all likelihood go on the floor sometime next year and will be produced by Sajid Nadiadwala (Khan teamed up with him earlier in Phantom). Currently, Khan and his team of writers are busy working out the final draft of the script,
while the rest of the cast members are yet to
        be finalised.
