With moonlight kayaking, kite surfing and snorkelling, Aqua Outback is Chennaias newestA weekend getaway.

When any excuse for travel suffices, a long weekend seems just the right time to pack my bags and put another dent in my savings account. This time, the destination is Aqua Outback, a small four-room resort (in the Santorini white-and-blue style) and activity centre in Tuticorin. It is perfect, considering its proximity and the budget. So off I go with friends, with just backpacks, slippers and my snorkel kit that travels everywhere with me.
2Aqua Outback combines the beach and mangroves, with some great activities (kayaking or bird-watching, anyone?) and good old-fashion relaxation. The humble establishment was started by Arjun Motha, a Tuticorin-based environmental conservationist and adventure lover, a year ago. An overnight train from Chennai brings us to the Tuticorin station early in the morning, where the first friendly face from Aqua Outbackawhom we nickname Paddy, our diver-cum-guide for the next three daysameets us. A bumpy half-hour drive across some rugged terrain, sandwiched between white salt fields scattered with flamingos and untouched green expanses, brings us to the quiet coral reef where the resort is located. The interiors are rusticasimple bamboo furniture, lamps made from recycled wood, a stone bar, and straw-and-wood mattresses with printed sea-themed cushions. My favourite spot is a bamboo ladder that leads up to a little deck with a panoramic view of the sea and the neighbouring islands. The rustic theme extends to the spacious rooms, furnished with antique wood decor and an open-air bathroom. All of this is managed perfectly by Madasami, the chief of hospitality, whose radiant smile never slipsacome rain, shine or power cuts.

3Day 1: We are greeted with strong homemade tea/coffee, brewed by chef Munisamy whose kitchen skillsaa home-style multi-cuisine menu customised to guestsa preferencesawill leave us in a food coma in the days to come. Then, with a chilled beer and a book in hand, we settle down in the shack. But soon I canat ignore the call of the sea and slip into my snorkelling gear. The sea is silent and the bright hues of green, red and yellow of the reefs are crystal clear, with a variety of fish swimming in and out. Not too deep, the waters are perfect for swimming, too. After a quick breakasnacking on fresh seafoodawe go kayaking through the beautiful mangrove forests of the Gulf of Manar Biosphere, which is right next door. My first time kayaking is exhilarating, a mix of exercise, fun and pure freedom. And the sunset is indescribable.

Day 2: We wake up fresh, ready to do justice to the breakfast. Some beach volleyball, and even a spot of a?sea volleyballa follows. A private stretch of beach gives me plenty of space to just wander, collect my thoughts, and add shells to my collection. A group of kindred guestsaon a birthday trip from Bengaluruajoin us. We try our hand at some line fishing in a man-made pond (created to revive fish breeding due to the over-exploitation of fish by the locals). Maximus, the in-house cocker spaniel and sergeant of Aqua Outback, stands guard as we end the day with a surreal moonlit kayaking expedition into the mangroves, surrounded by bioluminescent algae.

4Day 3: Thanks to some light showers, our reef exploration and bird watching plans are halted. Instead, we entertain ourselves with board games, snorkelling, kayaking and some great conversation, while enjoying the fresh air. Our last treat on the trip is a quick stop at Aadvark Cafe, a little bakery that has some of Tuticorinas best cakes. The three days are a welcome break, and highly recommended to anyone who wants to escape the monotonous hustle and bustle of the city. In fact, my round two is already booked.

    Macaroons and fish markets
While at the resort, head out for a walk in the salt fields or do a spot of bird watching. Guided tours will take you around Tuticorinawith stops at the 16th century Our Lady of Snows Basilica, Gamesh bakery (to see how the townas famous macaroons are made) and fish auctions at the local market. Motha, who plans to start a dive school soon, has recently introduced kite surfing. You can also sign up for the volunteering programme there and help with re-wilding fish, mangrove forest conservation and the like.
Rs 3,500 onwards per person per day. Details: aquaoutback.com.

Entrepreneurs may be fronting a few campaigns, but fashion brands prefer the tried and tested formula of Hollywood biggies

FROM perfumes to watches a Hollywoodas tryst with luxury brands is well known. Take for example the already familiar associations like Johnny Depp for Christian Dioras Sauvage or Eddie Redmayne for Omega. In fact, this time Louis Vuitton went a step ahead and chose Japanese anime Final Fantasy heroine Lightning for its Spring Summer 2016 collection. Now that the competitive spirit is high, letas look at what the other brands are doing
      aCompiled by Seema Rajpal
      2Kendall Jenner
This time, the clothing line of Mango had a new collection in mind for which it chose model Kendall Jenner as brand ambassador. The collection we are talking about is Tribal Spirit, inspired by the African Savannah. However, the 20-year-old and the Spanish brand are facing severe backlash online, about what a a?white modela? is doing endorsing a collection inspired by the African Savannah. Most of the comments have been directed towards Mango and so far, they have remained tight-lipped about the criticism coming their way.

      3Zoe Kravitz
Calvin Kleinas watch and jewellery campaign is a double delight. Mother-daughter duo Lisa Bonet, in a two-piece bikini under a sheer cover up, and Zoe Kravitz, in a simple maxi, feature in the new campaign of the American fashion house. This tops other triumphs a she walked the ramp for Alexander Wangas final Balenciaga show and started featuring in their campaigns last October. Whatas next, Kravitz?

      4Susan Sarandon
Proving the adage that a?beauty is timelessa, Susan Sarandon, at the age of 69, was chosen as the LaOreal Paris brand ambassador last month. Names like Julianne Moore and Eva Longoria are already with the French cosmetic and beauty care giant and now Sarandon becomes the spokesperson for their Age Perfect line. Known best for her roles in Little Women (1994) and Stepmom (1998), the American actor is also a BAFTA and Academy award winner. LaOreal Paris made this announcement via Instagram just a week ago and in their promotional videos, she talks about how she prefers the tag a?mothera in place of Oscar-winner. Wow, youare worth it!

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' "Tammy" - ArrivalsLea Seydoux
Lea Seydoux became a familiar name in Hollywood with movies like Inglorious Basterds and Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and now with the Bond girlas association with French luxury brand Louis Vuitton announced last week, it is clear that she is here to stay. The 30-year-oldas first outing as the face of the brand came last week, where she rocked the custom-made black body suit, under a sheer black gown at the UNICEF fund raiser in Los Angeles, hosted by Louis Vuitton. Known to have signed up stars like Angelina Jolie and singer Jennifer Lopez, the brand intends to launch its new advertisement campaigns with Seydoux soon.

      Chris Hemsworth
In November last year, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth was announced as Tag Heueras new brand ambassador. The videos and posters of the a?Donat crack under pressurea campaign perfectly captures the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 watch and the actoras good looks. The 32-year-old joins the likes of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and model Cara Delevingne who are with the brand already. His next movie The Huntsman: Winteras War is as much awaited as his next series of posters for the Swiss watch brand.

Pondicherry gets its much-awaited motopub, with a lounge, store and a restaurant that opens this weekend

SLEEK black bike silencers hang from the ceiling, shedding a faint red glow. Leather motorbike seats propped up by rubber tyres double as bar stools. A customised Royal Enfield occupies pride of place at The Road, Pondyas new motopub.
The LED lighting, the hit-the-road music and the vintage posters all set the mood to step in, lounge back and let your hair down.
            Hot wheels
Owned by BK Madhavan and Adal Arasan, who are also associated with the Royal Enfield showroom, the theme is a big draw for bike enthusiasts.
2While accessories like tees, anti-pollution masks, helmets, gloves and jackets can be purchased at the motopub, biker groups can also book the entire ground floor, that can seat 15-20.
You may bump into a leather-clad motorcyclist or two, but The Road wants to be much more than a biker hangout, asserts Arasan.A a?We hope to make it the most happening spot in the White Towna the kind of place where you can unwind after work on week nights and weekends.a? The lounge upstairs, with a glass dance floor and disco lights, is the centre of all the action be it Ladies Night on Wednesdays, live performances and DJ Nites every Saturday or the soon-to-be introduced Karoke Friday nights.
a?The Royal Enfield displayed here has been customised and is on sale,a? adds Franc Badrinath, the manager. a?Riders can also bring their bikes or even Vespas to modify them according to their taste.a?
            Breezy barbecue
3The rooftop restaurant (6 pm to 11 pm) opening this weekend, is the latest addition to the space that opened just before New Year. The menu, with a mix of Indian and Continental, is still a work-in-progress and as of now boasts staples, says Badrinath. The seafood platters with lobsters, snapper and calamari, are easily the most appetising. The live tandoor counter is a sizzling spot to grab a plate of fish tikka or prawn kebab hot off the tawa. The bar menu is extensive with a list of interesting shooters and shots. Donat forget to sample their signature Road Cocktails (`200 upwards) like the aptly named Passion Rider (vodka, rum and passion syrup) or Ride to Goa (vodka and guava). What is sure to catch the fancy of a few is the upcoming hookah corner on the rooftop, that is an uncommon find in the city.
The Road is open on Rue Bussy from noon to midnight. Details: 4201122

In an exclusive interview, UFC champion Robbie Lawler talks about Floyd Mayweather, fitness and why the sport makes for great TV viewing.

He is ruthless, powerful, and can be dangerous. No, we are not talking about Kevin Spaceyas character from House of Cards but Robbie Lawler, the reigning champion of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). While the sport is already popular in the US, the UFC fever has now spread to India, too, with fans waking up as early as 6.30 am to catchA the live telecast of their favourites in action.
Fighters like Lawler, Nick Diaz, Chuck Liddell and Georges Pierre have a huge fan following in the country. It is reminiscent of the buzz around F1 a few years ago, except that there is no Indian in the fray here.
Lawler has held the prestigious UFC title since December 2014, and promises to fight with as much vigour in the upcoming season, when he defends his title. We get talking to the 33-year-old Welterweight Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion who lets us in on his training, favourite pastime and more.
UFC Fighter PortraitsWhat does 2016 have in store?
Iam resting right now, but I have a couple of bouts this year. I look forward to whatever UFC will put me through.
What has this break been like, after the title win?
Life is great after winning the title again. Iam feeling good about life in general. Now Iave started putting in a little bit of work before the seasonas training starts.
In a recent interview you mentioned that Floyd Mayweather or any boxer canat last beyond a round against an MMA fighter.
Iam sure I offended quite a few people around the world, but I was as nice as I could be when I said it. Boxing and MMA are two different sports and, that apart, Mayweather cannot wrestle. Itas a huge disadvantage when someone canat wrestle in MMA.
Has there been a low point in your 15-year career?
I never lose my spirit. Thatas the only thing I can control. I learn from my losses and try to constantly get betteraitas a part of my journey.
In a sport like yours, age plays a huge role. At 33, how far do you think your body can take you?
It is a rigid, rough sport and if your body canat do it, thereas no point being in the ring. For me, I just take it one fight at a time.
What does Robbie Lawler do when he isnat fighting?
I watch movies, random programmes on TV and hang out with my family. I also like to catch a lot of games, like basketball, football, tennis and boxing.
What do you like splurging on?
I have a watch or two and though I like fast cars, I donat own one.
Tell us a little about your training?
If Iam in a fight camp, during off-season, I do a lot of strength and functional movement training. During fight season, I work on my precision and speed.
UFC Fight Night, on January 31, at 6.30 AM, on Sony ESPN
