Actor Channing Tatumas first outing in an animated feature is now on TV. Plus, what to expect from Hail, Caesar!

LAST week at the Golden Globes, actor Channing Tatum along with Jonah Hill presented the first award of the ceremony, and attempted a peculiar skit on Leonardo DiCaprioas The Revenant.
The act may have been off target but Tatumas next release Hail, Caesar! promises to deliver the goods. This ensemble-comedy directed by four-time Oscar winners Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen sees Tatum slide and dance on a table in the trailer. The 35-year-old, whose venture into production with the Magic Mike series is an obvious commercial success, is also ready to back and play Gambit, which is based on the X-Men series.

THE BOOK OF LIFEAs a tribute

Director David O Russell on the women who inspired Joy and the truth about Jennifer Lawrence

DAVID O Russellas Joy bagged Jennifer Lawrence her third Best Actress award at the Golden Globes recently. The hat-trick was all the more special as her earlier wins were for Russellas movies too. Based on the real life character of entrepreneur Joy Mangano, Joy is the story of struggle and success of a woman inventor. The Oscar-nominated director gives us an insight into his actors and talks about what Joy means to him.

2What was it about this story that intrigued and excited you?
This is a very unlikely success story about a woman making it happen in business on her own. For me, it changes everything to have men in the film who are real, generous and humble enough to be there as part of Joyas story. As Joy says at the beginning when she is a little girl, she does not need a prince.

Can you discuss your working relationship with Jennifer Lawrence?
She was 20 years old when we met and worked together (on Silver Linings Playbook). I watched how that girl who liked to be true to her spirit, who was completely unpredictable and free and alive, channeled all that into acting in a true way, without over-thinking anything. This time, I saw her become a leader in a way on the set and itas just been very beautiful watching her.

Who were your inspirations for Joy?
Thereas my mother. There is also Lillian Vernon, the entrepreneur who created the first mail order catalogue in the a50s and a60s. But I would say about roughly half the film, give or take, is based on true incidents from Joy Manganoas life.

EE British Academy Film Awards - Press RoomCan you discuss Robert De Niroas role? He is hilarious in this film. There is a great scene in which heas telling his daughter she should not marry Tony a on her actual wedding day!
Yes, it happened to Joy (Mangano). She said as they walked down the aisle, her father said that. De Niro plays someone who loves his daughter and would do anything for her, yet makes blunders that get in his own way, which is exactly what Joyas own father has been like in her life.

You were shooting in the middleAof winter in Boston. Did it createAdifficulties?
They had the biggest snowfall in 80 years in Boston and we used it. We had to manufacture snow, but there was also real snow everywhere. It was great for usabut everybody else couldnat get to work!
            Joy is scheduled toArelease today.

Actor, composer, singer and performer, Ali Zafar is thrilled with his recent connect to cricket. a?As a child, I wanted to be a cricketer, and I have played a lot of cricket in my life. I am ecstatic when something related to cricket happens. Thatas why I think itas going be very exciting being part of the PSL,a? says the Kill Dil star, referring to his performance last month at Lahore for the launch of Pakistan Super League (PSL). Zafar sang the theme song Khel Ke Dikha Denge Aaj, which he not only penned but composed as well. Having recently concluded 50 concerts in 60 days, the 35-year-old loves performing live and says, a?I wanted to connect with the people in interior parts of Pakistan, the smaller cities.

3 The kind of love and response we get and the way crowds remember your songs is always special.a? The actor who debuted with Tere Bin Laden, is currently working on his own album, which will strike a special note with poetry aficionados. a?So far Iave penned most of the lyrics and used poetry by some respected poets from history, whose names I canat share now,a? answers the Pakistan-based musician even before we can probe. The Hateful Eight
                Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Kurt Russell, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Madsen
The movie is Quentin Tarantinoas eighth film, and while itas certainly not his weakest effort, it is also far from his best. Two hours and 45 minutes is much too long for what transpires in this snowy dramatic mystery. The violence is bloody, and is as compelling as the mystery surrounding the characters. The film of course has Tarantinoas style of storytelling, but it does get a bit tiring to go through an ordeal that seems far too long.

                2Chalk na Duster
                Director: Jayant Gilatar
                Cast: Shabana Azmi, Juhi
                Chawla, Divya Dutta
Set in a public school, it tells the story of senior teachers, Vidya Sawant (Azmi) and Jyoti Thakur (Chawla), who take immense pride in what they do. But things change as new management comes on board, with the hope to make the school presentable for rich families. The film has its heart in the right place, as it tries to address the state of the Indian education system, but the sloppy execution is slightly disappointing. Watch it for Azmi and Chawla as they shine right through.

                3Rajini Murugan
                Director: Ponram
                Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Keerthi Suresh
Unpretentious in its scripting and narrative style, unabashed in its intention of providing the audience some fun-time, the film keeps one engaged for the most part. The gags flow in quick succession as the plot progresses, the lines sparkling. Sivakarthikeyan is eminently watchable as Murugan the actoras exuberance infectious. Soory matches him step to step, in their wacky acts. Itas a speedy first half, with some slackening moments in the second. A fun film and an unabashed commercial entertainer, it is ideal festival fare.

Leone on going nerdy for an upcoming role, challenging new scripts and plans for a production house.

orn Karenjit Kaur Vohra, the Canadian Penthouse Pet of the Year 2003 is best known by her stage name, Sunny Leone. The 35-year-old former adult film star, who determinedly reinvented herself as a Bollywood actor, is ready with her next film. Mastizaade (releasing January 29) is her first film in a double role. She is trending at the moment for how she graciously handled her interviewer Bhupendra Chaubeyas line of questioning on CNN IBN. I am left nothing but impressed by this forthright woman who has no qualms about her past, but is enjoying a present she could never have dreamed of.

                  2What attracted you to Mastizaade?
Milap Zaveri (director) said he wanted me to do the double roles of Laila and Lily. When I first read the script I really liked Lilyas character. The double role was definitely something that attracted me to the film because everybody has seen me wear a bikini and be really sexy and do all these types of things, but to be able to play someone whoas a little clumsy and a little nerdy and not as glamorous as her sister was interesting.

The filmas promos have received polarized reactions: from millions of YouTube hits to those who are appalled by its crass humour and sexual jokes. How do you respond to this?
The easiest response, which makes the most sense to me is, a?just donat watch the filma. Thatas the nice thing about where we live: you have a choice to watch a movie like this or donat and this movie is for adults only. It is adult humour.

Are you getting a variety of scripts or is there a tendency towards typecasting Sunny Leone?
There have been a lot of films in the adult genre and some horror films, like Ragini MMS 2, but a couple of the next films Iam a part of are in a completely different space, and weare going to see how people like that. Is there sex appeal and glamour a all of that and above a yes, of course. But in the next couple of movies weall find out if people like seeing me in a different way. One is called One Night Stand which obviously sounds like everything else, but itas not. Itas more on a serious tone of a movie. Thereas Beimaan Love which is an underdog story about a young girlas rise and fall and how she gets back up again. I have also set up my own production company with my husband and hopefully this year we will develop a story that I really want to work on.
