Geoffrey Arend on his Madam Secretary stint
HE is witty and he has a way with words. And soon Geoffrey Arend will be in your living room a as his show Madam Secretary debuts on Indian TV this month. Itas a political series interwoven with the personal and professional life of Elizabeth Mccord (TAa Leoni), secretary of state, where Arend plays the role of head speech writer Matt Mahoney. a?I am the right-hand man to Leonias character. On a personal level, Mahoney has a habit of thinking highly of himself but professionally heas always concerned with doing the right thing,a? begins the Garden State actor.
Always interested in politics, he spent hours reading through the famous speeches from the American history, including the ones from Lincoln and Nixon, to prepare for his role. He recalls an instance where he ended up playing a real life speech writer for his wife Christina Hendricks (Mad Men fame) while she ?attended the White House Working Families Summit (2015).

    Delving deep
Arend believes that positivity or a sense of overriding hope is what marks Madam Secretary different from rest of the shows around (think Quantico). a?You see shows with so much negativity where everything from politics to personal lives are turning bad. While we arenat trying to paint a rosy picture, our show definitely focusses on the good side of it all. I mean, there are people who work hard, but still want to and can have an equally important family life,a? he adds.

    Stage connect
When asked about his favourite show, the 38-year-old literature nerd picks Penny Dreadful. a?I adore the series for its accents and connections with existing literary traditions (think HG wells),a? he tells us.
But of course, Madam Secretary remains one of his career favourites. a?Almost everyone in the cast except for me and a couple of others, are from a theatre and musical background. And you always find them breaking into dance or song, itas so random. You also get to listen to true talents like Patina Miller singing. Itas been a unique experience.a?

Sunny Leone on hosting MTV Splitsvilla 9, Apainting her hair blue, and pink, Aand the rules of relationships

2016 has been a busy year for Sunny Leone. She has had two film releases (Mastizaade, and One Night Stand), and is excited about Beiimaan Love hitting theatres in August. Meanwhile, she wrote an e-book of 12 short erotic stories, Sweet Dreams, and launched her perfume line, Lust. She also has plans to roll out a range of lipsticks, nail polish, mascara, and lotions. And last month, she made time for her third appearance on dating reality show, MTV Splitsvilla, as its host.
She had a fun time shooting for the soon-to-be-aired Season 9 of MTV Splitsvilla in Pondicherry, and thatas her philosophy a Life is too short, have fun.The adult star-turned-Bollywood actress recalls, a?We shot at the Ocean Spray resort. Itas so beautiful that I can stay there forever. Also, my co-host (Rannvijay Singha) would say some of the most outrageous things in the heat of the moment, and then we both wouldnat stop laughing.a?
A look at her recent Instagram and Facebook posts, and you will know Leone has been in an experimental mode lately. She is sporting a blue and pink hairdo. She laughs, and tells us, a?Thatas for this show! When you are doing movies, or promoting them, you canat really experiment with your hairstyle. But since Splitsvilla is a young show, I told my hairstylist, who is from Prague, and makeup artiste, who is from Germany, a?You guys do whatever you want to do for the next 30 daysa. So you will see me in 60-70 looks on the show, sporting blue-purple,
electric blue and pink hair colours.a?

          Guiding light
Amid all the fun, Leone and Singha have a serious task at hand, which is to guide 15 celebrity boys, and girls staying in the villa to find a?lovea. This hunt is strewn with challenging tasks, jealousy, hatred, and fights. While Leone doesnat divulge details about this yearas theme a?Where Women Rulea, she shares, a?Itas the connection between individuals, be it friendship, love or romance, that play a huge role in Splitsvilla. These connections take the game forward. On the show, Singha and I often hear these contestants saying that they want to keep their options open. But we tell them itas all about finding that one connection. We look at things from the outside, not from an emotional standpoint.a?
Any relationship rules that she swears by? a?Trust, compromise and respect,a? says the Ragini MMS 2 star. While she does think that chivalry is desirable, a?girls must not take advantage of the fact that they are girls,a? and, a?treat their men how they want themselves to be treated,a? she adds.
Being a celebrity inevitably puts your personal life in the spotlight, so how does Leone and her husband-cum-business manager, Daniel Weber handle this? a?We are madly in love. Heas my best friend and I am his. We have nothing to worry about. There are times when I see girls hitting on him. He then gives me that a?Arenat you going to save me?a look. Itas so cute to watch his face turn red. I know that heas not going anywhere.a?

            Cast: Radhika Apte, Satyadeep Mishra
            The film is about

This being Kripalanias third directorial venture, it has no over-the-top supernatural elements but loses all logic towards the end of the movie. Watch it for Apte as she keeps the movie going with her brilliant acting.

Get fit by going barefoot at The Hood

Itas no secret that being connected to your roots will definitely do you some good. So, as expected, training barefoot is turning out to be a hugely popular trend, with everyone from athletes and celebs like Milind Soman taking to it in droves. Known for its training techniques that tackle lifestyle issues rather than just calories, The Hood in Marathahalli, is one of the few gyms in the city to offer the option of working out sans footwear. a?Going barefoot is our natural state of being. So thereas nothing more powerful that working out as naturally as possible. Thatas why yoga doesnat require you to wear shoes,a? begins Nimisha Saha, assistant coach for strength and conditioning at The Hood.
And while taking the natural route to fitness sounds great on paper, we asked her what kind of a difference it actually makes to oneas body. a?Every part of the body is connected. The feet are connected to the heart, head and lungs directly or indirectly. So when you train without shoes, the impact works on all parts of your feet, which in turn, activates deep tissues and muscle, such as the psoas, that are otherwise difficult to reach,a? she explains. Weight lifting, running, plyometrics and mixed martial arts are a few of the programs that you can participate in barefoot at The Hood. But what if you plant your feet on something sharp or hard? a?It must be done in a controlled environment,a? she explains, adding, a?But if this canat be done, itas best to wear a five finger shoe. It has a thin sole that fits like a glove on the feet.a?

                Mixed bag
Sonakshi Sinha has certainly been bitten by wanderlust. One look at her photo sharing feed and youall see that she hops over to Goa at the smallest opportunity and is currently enjoying down time (between professional commitments) in America. But sheas also been working consistently, on Force 2 with John Abraham and Akira directed by AR Murugadoss. Later this year, she will start filming for Vipul Shahas Namastey England with Akshay Kumar and has also signed up for two other interesting projects. The first is the Ittefaq remake co-starring Sidharth Malhotra, being produced by Shah Rukh Khan, and the second is Sunhil Sippyas Noor, based on the comic crime thriller novel Karachi, Youare Killing Me! Sippy has previously made the National Award-winning black comedy, Snip! This is the ad filmmakeras second film in 16 years. Interestingly, after working with Kumar, Abraham, Shahid Kapoor and Salman Khan, in Noor she will be working with a standup comic-turned-actor, Kanan Gill. As for Sinha, her choices continue to surprise us.

                Missing his groove

British thespian Ian McKellenas conversation with Aamir Khan was the talk of the townaand not just because of McKellenas wit, wisdom and engagement with the audience on William Shakespeare, acting and homosexuality. The hotter topic was how host Khan seemed ill suited to the job and poorly prepared to talk about Shakespeare and his great works. Khan even fumbled while recalling the names of the three plays that Vishal Bhardwaj had adapted into Hindi film. However, when the Lord of the Rings actor (he played the bearded and wise Gandalph) asked Khan which Shakespearean character he would like to play, he did have an answer at the readyaIago from Othello.

                Girl in controlAKalki
Kalki Koechlin is enjoying the wonderful
reviews for her latest film, Waiting. Sheas also
happy to finally have her own home in Mumbaiaa bright, airy apartment in a suburb close to the film industry studios and offices. a?Itas my first home and I am so happy,a? she said. But what sheas not so happy about are the rumours surrounding her relationships. The Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani actress has recently been linked to a Bollywood co-actor, a theatre actor and a female colleague. But if anyone can take these speculations in her stride, it is Koechlin. When I met her at her new apartment last week, she didnat have staff bringing us water and coffeeashe made filter coffee herself, from local beans. What a refreshing change from the battery of managers, spot boys and assistants who usually
fuss and hover around our stars these days.

                NandhithaNandita finds her Manto
Itas always a pleasure to meet Nandita Das and it was no different last week when I met her during the Kashish Film Festival in Mumbai. Das was participating in a panel on censorship at the LGBTQ-themed festival, which was fitting given that her first major movie, Fire (1996), dealt with a same-sex relationship and faced a controversial release. While best known for her acting work, Das directed the powerful Firaaq (2008) and is currently prepping for her next directorial projectaan ambitious period film called Manto, based on the life of the seven years (1945-1952) in the life of the maverick writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Das recently confirmed the casting of Nawazuddin Siddiquiawho also appeared in Firaaqain the titular role along with Rasika Dugalawho impressed in the critically-acclaimed Qissaaas Mantoas wife Safia. Manto is slated to shoot early next
                year in Mumbai and Lahore.
