Besides its destination restaurant, The Flying Elephant, and private dining space, The Apartment, Chennai’s Park Hyatt is known for its modern and edgy interiors and the content reclining Ganesha between the restaurants. And now there is something else for the art aficionado — an impressive collection of 13 paintings related to the theme  Earth by Monali Meher, Chila Burman, Medha Prabhakar, Smriti Dixit, Nidhi Agarwal, Priti Kahar, Parvathi Nayar, Benita Perciyal, Simrin Mehra Agarwal and Anjali Srinivasan.

This is an initiative with city-based Gallery Veda, and from October 7, the art will go up on the walls at the main lobby, restaurants, banquets and the gallery. The collection, titled Wonderland, is yet another effort by galleries and star hotels to showcase art. Incidentally, art expert, Sharan Apparao, introduced this idea in the city with her gallery at Taj Connemara several years ago.

As for the Park Hyatt project, curators Preeti Garg and Antara Tulsyan, the directors of Gallery Veda, say, their very first show at Gallery Veda was a group show by women artists. ‘‘ ‘Also, these artists work with concepts that go beautifully with the hotel interiors. The paintings bring life to the walls while working with the interiors’ subtle colour scheme and natural quality. There will also be works that retain the hotel’s concept of a home away from home,” says Tulsyan.
Garg adds that all the paintings are on sale and will be changed every three to four months. The owners vote for Medha Prabhakar’s Mapping Fragrances as their personal favourite. As for the theme, Tulsyan says, “It is called Wonderland because all the works are related to the earth and what exists on it — the wonder of what this land has to offer.’’
