Films and parodies get you feeling patriotic in cyberspace
Every Independence Day, you are likely to hear at least a line from Tryst with Destiny, the historic speech made by Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14, 1947. And now, Culture Machine, known for their satirical take on all things current, is turning patriotic for the month with their take on Indian Independence. “We will create content to make the audience laugh, yet remind them of their Indianness,” begins Sameer Pitalwalla, co-founder. A series of specially curated videos will be uploaded to cover information, music, comedy and social awareness, through their channels Being Indian, Bollywood Gandu and CM Music. It all begins with the release of India’s Facebook Timeline. The video will document India joining Facebook, and the nation’s journey from August 15, 1947 to the recent 2014 general elections — with important milestones and a dubstep version of the national anthem.
Drawing on 300 YouTubers associated with their network, they will generate a version of the popular song E Mere Watan Ke Logon. “A simple, nostalgic and endearing tribute,” Pitalwalla shares, adding that we can also look out for the anthem sung by citizens across the country in their hometowns. “Being a company that caters to online viewers, we decided to create a video that is holistic and relevant,” he says.
On the same channel, Being Indian, look out for Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech with kinetic typography, Junta ki Awaaz — a vox pop on current issues, Made In India – a film about those who’ve played a role in India’s development. And on their other channel, Bollywood Gandu, catch the two-part film, Indian In History — a hilarious fictional take on what would happen if Indians were part of global historic events.
