The new workout address in town comes with fancy equipment, luxe skincare from Italy and soon, face yoga
Dr Saravan Ramanarayan has a dream: to start a hospital specialising in hepatology. However, that is the finale of a three-year plan, with pit-stops along the way that include a gym and a salon. “Too many people have started hospitals, only to falter due to bad management. I want to learn how to be an entrepreneur before taking the leap,” begins the 30-year-old surgeon, who assisted gastroenterologist Dr R Surendran at Apollo Hospitals for three years, before branching out on his own. “Fitness is a passion, and since health is also about being fit and looking good, a gym and a salon were the obvious starting points,” he adds.
Pulling your weight
As we head to Touch Gym, launched a couple of months ago in Anna Nagar, we have to ask, aren’t there one too many sprouting up in the city? But as it turns out, the 3,000 sq ft outfit—done up in greys and blues, with ceiling to floor windows—seems a good addition. “I have the latest equipment, launched last November by the top US brand, Precor. Most gyms use equipment that are at least 10 years old, as they are cost effective. But I wanted to offer my clients an experience on par with the best gyms in the world,” says Ramanarayan. The machines not only help you create customised regimens, they also minimise injury and show you (with a muscle monitor display) if you are working out specific muscles properly.
Currently divided into strength, cardio and freestyle, he says that in the next few months he plans to expand (taking up two more floors in the building) and bring in Aqua Zumba and a smart swimming pool—with a wave effect that will make “you feel like you are swimming in the ocean”. “We will also convert the terrace into a Japanese-style garden, where I will introduce yoga, with a focus on anti-gravity and face yoga (for anti-ageing),” he says.
Right face on
With the gym signing up over 150 members, Ramanarayan has now moved on to his next project, Touch Makeover Salon. Another 3,000 sq ft space, launched a couple of days ago in Shanti Colony, has FarmaVita HD, a luxury hair care brand from Italy that is 100 per cent ammonia free. The entrepreneur adds that for the skin they use Sothys, the luxe Parisian brand. Currently offering staples like facials, hair spas and bridal make-up, he plans to up the ante with some extra touches. “I am in talks with B Blunt’s Adhuna Akhtar to take workshops for my stylists and I am also planning to offer my clients free pick up in a luxury car (he is looking to tie up with Jaguar),” he concludes.
