For those living in Shanti Colony, Akshayam is much appreciated. Owned by five brothers (P Venketesan, A Kumaraguru, K Rajesh, B Vinoth and SR Rajeshwaran), this pure vegetarian address serves South Indian staples, along with Chinese and North Indian fare. However, this is not the first food venture for the brothers. “Venketesan owns Balaji Bhavan in Saidapet, Kumaraguru has Kavitha in Trichy, Vinoth owns Padma, also in Trichy, Rajeshwaran has Anjana in Theni and I own a restaurant called Leela Bhavan on Greams Road,” says Rajesh.
From their list of soups, we choose the hot and sour that fails to impress with an overdose of pepper. However, their gobi and paneer 65 are well flavoured and a hit among customers. A must try is the idli sambar that is served hot with a hint of ghee. Among a list of 20 dosas, their crispy, non-sticky rava dosa gets a thumbs up from us. For dessert they offer ice cream in standard flavours like chocolate, butterscotch and vanilla, served the old-fashioned way, with rainbow sprinkles.
The owners soon hope to open a chaat corner that will offer everything from dahi paapdi chaat and sev poori, to pav bhaji and more. Going by the crowds on most nights, Akshayam has already made an impact. Meal for two from Rs 400 onwards. Details:45510055
