Bollywood singer Shalmali Kholgade is set to release her first independent song
THIS 28-year-old Bollywood singer, right from her debut Pareshaan (Ishaqzaade, 2012), has given us memorable hits like Aga Bai (Aiyya, 2012) and Daru Desi (Cocktail, 2012). Shalmali Kholgade is now set to explore new avenues with her independent single called Aye, where she is also the director. Telling us how she started out wanting to do independent music, the Mumbai-based singer adds, “But things turned out differently. Now, I am thrilled that I got some time off and found the right people to work with (on this project),” she says.
Music and lyrics
Aye (colloquial way of calling someone), is a song about freedom to choose and gender equality according to Kholgade. “In a bid to fit into society and follow norms, we don’t do the things that we want to do. So, Aye is a song that puts this thought across, like ‘Aye, don’t you tell me what I should do or not do,’ and ‘I want to lead my life on my own terms’,” says the Balam Pichkari singer. The music, Kholagade says, is of the trap genre, an offshoot of hip-hop. “It is very popular around the world right now; artistes like Beyonce and Rihanna and to some extent Justin Bieber are into this genre. I am a big fan of electronic music in general. And I felt that for a subject like this and to appeal to the youth, this genre will be apt,” says the vocalist, who will also be judging the upcoming singing reality show, Dil Hai Hindustani on Star Plus.
On her debut directorial project, Kholgade says that it is a bold and dark video. “I am a very imaginative person and when I was doing this song, I had already imagined the visuals and the tonality of the video. I wasn’t sure if I wanted a director on board, so my friends suggested I should do it on my own,” says Kholgade, who admits that she is a big fan of Arijit Singh.
The song is set to release in January next year.
