Actor, producer and director Satish Kaushik has been in over 85 films in his career be it as Chenu Anand in Brick Lane or Calendar in Mr. India. But now, 16 years after he was last seen on Philips Top Ten, the prodigal son makes his return. Taking on the role of what is being called a ‘male mother-in-law’, in the latest show Sumit Sambhal Lega, he will play Jasbir Walia, Sumit’s (Namit Das) father. His character, though not the lead, is modelled around a man who has spent his life in Chandni Chowk and has spent his free moments romping around the streets of Delhi. “Now the family has shifted to Greater Kailash which is more elitist. But he maintains his old habits,” shares the actor of what he calls a lazy but juicy character.
Speaking about what drove him to return, he says, “Series like 24 have opened the gates for television and for me as an actor. I took this show as it was finite and the role was interesting,” he says of the series, which is an adaptation of American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Modified for an Indian audience, Kaushik tells us that it still resonates with the original, though his character is not the same as Frank’s. “The guys from the original came to monitor the show. That is when I said yes, as I was sure the quality won’t be compromised,” he shares.
Commenting on television in India, Kaushik marks that it has grown by leaps and bounds. “It has become much more professional with bigger budgets and sets. I am sure there will be a time when 70 mm and small screen will merge,” Kaushik concludes. Look out for cameo roles by Harsha Bhogle, Parmeet Sethi and even former cricketer Kapil Dev.
Begins August 31, Monday to Saturday at 10 pm on Star Plus.
