Dance and music are added to the shopping bag at the Madras Market this year
The fifth edition of the bi-annual (February and August) Madras Market brings us kid-friendly activities and more action on the stage. “The format remains the same, except for new additions like the art corner for kids, a laser show, a dance show down and a performance by Lagori (from Bangalore),” says Sarah Natasha of Full House Entertainment, the organiser. The market this year is at the Quaid-e-Millath College ground. Here’s a peek into what to expect.
Expect around 122 stalls featuring apparel, accessories and organic food. Plus, 20 food stalls that will serve customers nachos and steaks from New Yorker, cakes, muffins and cupcakes from the Old Madras Baking Company, delicious South Indian fare from Data Udipi and the popular Malaysian tea from Bubble Tea. We think the homemade jams, cookies and masalas on offer will be a hit, too.
“This year, we are trying to make it all about women and kids,” Natasha says. Three NGOs will have stalls—Chennai Turns Pink, Say No to Rape and Tiara, an organisation that supports haemophilia and paediatric patients. As for the kids, there will be games organised by Creative Ladder, a city-based event planning company, and Pondicherry-based May First Studio, which is curating the art corner.
Giving the parents some shopping time, kids can be kept busy with workshops like fall leaf painting, spray painting, best out of waste and more. There will also be a display of different art forms including wax and clay sculpting, while artists like Lavanya (block painting), Saranji and Ravin (pencil sketching), and Pawan Das (glass painting) will be showcasing their work, among others.
The stalls to watch out for are TruBio for organic spices, Shapeons (for hand-picked salwar kameez material from Surat and Kolkata), Bengaluru-based Iyla (for silver with one gram gold finish jewellery) and Lakshana, a city-based boutique offering Kanjeevaram, Uppada and Banarasi silk saris.
From February 28 to March 1, from 10 am to 11 pm.
