Baba Sehgal returns with a witty Roadies spoof called Soadies
India’s first rapper, and star entertainer from the 90s, Baba Sehgal has a certain rap style even when talking. “I am a T-R-Y person. I will try anything in the entertainment industry,” begins Sehgal, who is appearing in Soadies, a Roadies spoof web series, which premiered last week on Voot. With a trailer that has already hit over a million views on YouTube, the series is about a Roadies obsessed light-hearted Punjabi family, whose lives revolve around the MTV show. From motorcycle spare parts as puja room paraphernalia and Roadies presenters, Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman, as the deities, the Soadies family assume every day as a Roadies task waiting to be cleared.
“In the show, I try my hand at various antics to get past the Roadies audition, only to be kicked out by the unimpressed angry twins, Raghu and Rajiv—all for my Papaji, Super Senior Soadie, who dropped dead doing pushups in a Roadies audition,” says Sehgal. He also jokes that he was selected for Soadies for his bald head that resembles Ram and Laxman’s. The six-part series, which also uses original Roadies footage, will see cameo appearances by Raghu-Rajiv in future episodes. “I have tried my hand at rap, playback singing, television compering and even YouTube singles, so why not a web series—after all it’s the future of entertainment as even movies are released for the web these days,” adds the 50-year-old entertainer, who has just finished playing a villain in an upcoming Gautam Menon Tamil/Telugu movie, Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo.
