    Sample a lavish barbecue spread at The Open Box

    A busy weekday evening is not the best time to tuck into an elaborate barbecue platter. But with the recent strikes rendering the central business district into a ghost town, we thought it best to take advantage of the empty roads and head to The Open Box to sample their new barbecue menu.
    The menu is short and sweet, and the dishes do not disappoint, though options for vegetarians are understandably limited.
    We start with the Grilled Halloumi with Poached Apricot Skewer, served with garlic mayo. Perfect for a barbecue, the cheese is crumbly and toasty with the soft, pulpy apricot balancing the salty notes with its sweetness. Only one of the two vegetarian dishes on offer, this one is a must try for meat lovers too.
    The Grilled Chicken Satay which is served with grilled bok choy, a sprinkling of peanuts and a honey chilli dressing fails to make an impression, as does the Grilled Tandoori Chicken Kebab served with naan. However, the Chipotle Prawns with Grilled Cherry Tomatoes and Pineapple Kachumber more than makes up for what the previous two dishes lack. The smokey chipotle flavour pairs rather well with the prawns and the pineapple and cherry tomatoes give the dish a touch of freshness. On the whole, it’s a well balanced creation that hits the spot.
    Also highly recommended is the Lamb Kobideh Kebab with Sundried Tomato Hummus and Coin Pita. Traditionally made with ground meat, here, the Middle Eastern dish features skewered lamb chunks, which are cooked to perfection. The tiny pita coins definitely add to the appeal, especially when teamed with the hummus.
    Mix Veg Grill in Barbecue Sauce with Pickled Carrots, Spicy Cilantro Fish with Grilled Orange Wedges and Grilled Teriyaki Beef Skewers with Herbed Potato Wedges complete the menu.
