Subtle embellishments and simple designs make Winakki Kids a hit

Tapping into the kids evening wear market is Archana Kale, formerly a recruitment executive at AT&T. Partnering with Anuja Reddy, Kale’s venture Winakki Kids specialises in dresses that fall in between casual and overly dressy. A mother of two girls herself, Kale reveals how difficult it used to be to find suitable clothes for her babies. “I found that what was available was either too simple or too over the top — dresses you can wear to your own birthday party but not when you are invited to someone else’s. That’s kind of like stealing the bride’s thunder,” she laughs.
    Fabric speak
Kale and Reddy work mainly with chiffons, satin, crepe and georgette, which they assure is of the highest quality, making it safe for kids’ sensitive skin. “The most expensive satin, which is what we use, comes in very few colours. So we incorporate silk cotton fabrics, available in an wide array of bright hues to make our pieces more colourful,” Kale explains, adding, “We love playing around with colours, so everything we make is sure to be vibrant.”
If you’re looking for embellishments and bling, you will not
find it here as the duo believes in keeping things simple and comfortable. “Net fabrics, sequins and stones are not something we like to use as from experience, we know that they are uncomfortable and even painful for kids,” she tells us.
Currently available on e-commerce sites like Flipkart and Myntra, her latest line incorporates simple yet cute floral embroidered patterns on the body, skirt and belt. Winakki is expected to also expand to Jabong.com and Firstcry.com in the next two weeks, with Kale also exploring possibilities of opening up a brick and mortar store soon.
