You might want to hang on to your thought of buying a brand new compact SUV as there’s a lot happening in the segment this year. While you can still choose between the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, and of course, the Hyundai Creta, there are offerings from a bunch of manufacturers coming in the next few months. Here’s getting you started.
1. Maruti-Suzuki Vitara Brezza
Any new car from India’s favourite manufacturer, Maruti, is an event in itself, but coming out with a compact SUV (finally) is something else. Showed off a long time ago as the XA Alpha concept, the Vitara Brezza will take the compact SUV game straight to the best sellers of today. Most likely to be powered by Maruti’s 1.3-litre DDiS engine with 90PS on tap, the wait won’t be too long as the launch is just a month away. Expected price: Rs 6-8 lakh
2. SsangYong Tivoli
It’s been a while since we heard any activity from the SsangYong stables, but that might just change with the launch of the Tivoli in India. This one’s going to override other small SUVs in this list, simply for its design and premium appeal. While it will most likely get the Mahindra TUV 300’s 1.5-litre diesel engine for India, both manual and AMT gearbox options could make it on the features list. We’ll know for sure by mid-2016. Expected price: Rs 10-15 lakhs
3. Renault Duster
With all the competition it’s up against, the Renault Duster has just received its first major facelift for the Indian market. Looking slicker than before — though more in the details than in the overall design of the car — it will also introduce an AMT auto-box for the top end variants. Expected price: Rs 8-13 lakh
4. Honda BR-V
There have been talks of a small SUV from Honda for a while now and we knew it would be based on the Brio platform. Well, it’s almost here now in the form of the BR- V and you’d be forgiven to mistake it for a Mobilio, at least from the back (they do share platforms after all). The BR-V will take the Hyundai Creta head-on and promise a premium brand in the small SUV space. But you have to wait till the second half of 2016. Expected price: Rs 8-12 lakhs
5. Tata Nexon
Emerging straight out of Tata Motors’ Horizonext philosophy is the Nexon compact SUV, which recently broke cover in near-production form. If there was a beauty pageant in the segment, the Nexon would definitely be a top contender. Just as we have seen on the Tata Tiago (erstwhile Zica), Nexon will also break barriers in terms of connectivity and gadgets.
Expected price: Rs 5.5-8.5 lakhs
