A new app helps you locate a workout partner  just about anywhere

What do you do when you can’t find a friend to workout with you? Start an app to flex your own fix, apparently.

That’s what London-based Dhruv Menon decided to do to solve his problem —while hopping planes and hotel rooms as a part of his job as a financial advisor. Add
to that a marathoner wife and a BFF who is happiest when on a hiking trail, and you’ve got yourself the perfect team for a fitness start-up. Launched a month ago, the app FitInfinite is what its makers like to describe as an ‘Uber for fitness’. It uses your location to find you a buddy who will do everything from yoga to zumba to archery.

Anshuman Rane, co-founder and happy hiker, tells us how it works.

An Uber for fitness sounds really cool. Does this mean, one can find a workout partner in under 10 minutes?
Yes, absolutely. Anyone can find either a fitness buddy or a professional trainer on-demand. FitInfinite delivers results based on your location. You might want to take a Krav Maga class and not even realise that the person living two floors below you is an instructor. Send them a message and you’re ready to go.

There are a zillion workout apps in the market. What inspired this one?
Dhruv Menon, my co-founder, hates exercising alone and travels a lot. He was never able to find someone to go for a run or workout with while away from home. It was difficult to join a gym just for a day and walking up to a bunch of strangers in a park, asking to join them just made him look like a weirdo. And  so, FitInfinite was born!

Do you think fewer resolutions will be broken with a buddy system?
Our research overwhelmingly shows that being a part of an active, supportive community is the best motivation there is. Of the 450-plus people we surveyed, 70  per cent said that they would exercise more if they could find a buddy at a time and location of their choosing.

How does one exercise caution while choosing a partner?
We take safety very seriously and anyone can report anything untoward. Based on this info, we can block people or kick them off the app if we need to. Also, we urge people to exercise the same common sense they do in real life – meet in a public place, take a friend along, and be sensible with the information you share.
