Theatre artiste to leading man — Gokul Anand plays a director in Chennai 2 Singapore
Theatre artiste Gokul Anand is all set to hit the big screen with his debut leading role in the Tamil feature, Chennai 2 Singapore. Wrapping up the final weeks of shooting, the 25-year-old can be seen sporting long hair and an unkempt beard for the role. A graduate from Singapore’ Lasalle College of the Arts, Anand shares, “The music director of the film, (Mohamaad) Ghibran is a Lasalle alumnus, and is known to my mother. It was he who had suggested my name to the director Abbas (Akbar).” The actor further adds that the upcoming audio launch next month is exciting, “with a road trip planned all the way to Singapore, and one song launched at every country we cross (there are six songs).” The first song will be launched in Chennai and the last in Singapore, along with the trailer. Starring opposite Anju Kurian, Anand essays the role of an assistant director trying to make his first film.
Anand always knew his calling. In fact, the member of Boardwalkers theatre group had starred in a children’s serial for Asianet when he was eight, and by nine had acted in Hariharan’s Malayalam film, Prem Pujari. At 14, he had joined the Evam theatre group — with some TVCs thrown in, along the way. The actor says he was always surrounded by the arts. “My mum is a dancer and a singer. And my dad is a musician, though he works otherwise at an IT firm. My great grandfather was a poet from Kerala,” he says.
Though Anand likes to unwind with his guitar or by taking road trips, he admits, “Now I watch as many Tamil movies as I can.” Besides catching up on Oscar favourites like The Revenant and The Hateful Eight, the actor’s recent pick is Arvind Swamy’s Thani Oruvan. An ardent fan of actor R Madhavan, he has directors Selvaraghavan and Gautham Menon on his wish list. With plans of doing a film with Boardwalker’s Michael Muthu, they are on the lookout for a producer for the script, informs the actor.
Chennai 2 Singapore is slated to release in July.
