Standup comic Sapan Verma on his first solo show and some common OCD issues.

FROM his hilarious take on the fat tax, his Game of Thrones jokes (most recently, he compared the tussle between journalists Barkha Dutt and Arnab Goswami to GOT’s Battle of the Bastards) to funny Snapchat posts on his Facebook page, 27-year-old Sapan Verma is a comedian who connects with the youth. All set to perform at the Alliance Française tomorrow, East India Comedy’s co-founder is debuting Obsessive Comedic Disorder, his first solo show, in the city.  I catch up with him hours before his performance in Pune, where he has had only soup for lunch, as his stomach is in knots.

    Lots of nerve
Admitting to getting the jitters before every performance, especially a 70-minute solo show, Verma says, “I have anxiety issues, whether I am performing for 10 people or a 1,000.” The comic, who has performed over 700 live shows across the country and abroad, adds however, “that once the audience laughs at my first joke then it is completely okay”. Every comedian has their own rituals to deal with the panic attacks and anxiety. “I will be running around and screaming backstage,” Verma shares.

    ‘Disorder’ly conduct
The comic explains that solo shows are more about the comedian and his life. On why he chose OCD as a title, Verma shares that he will be touching upon a number of obsessive compulsive disorders during the show. “Everyone has some form of OCD in them, but the level varies,” says Verma, backing it with a quick example. “There are two kinds of peoplewho walk:  the one who wants to step on the tiles and avoid the  joints in the middle, and the one who wants to step on every joint and line in the middle.” He admits he belongs to the latter lot. A fan of comedians such as Bo Burnham, Louis CK, Ed Byrne, Simon Amstell and Anuvab Pal, Verma has recently completed five years of standup and is headed to Mumbai next.

    Rapid Fire

    • Who would win in a catfight between Hillary Clinton and Mamata Banerjee?

Oh my god! That’s a tough one. I think Hillary Clinton would win purely because she is used to dealing with somebody like a Donald Trump. I think if you can go through that, you can go through anything else.

    • If you were given a chance to form a club of your choice, what would it be ?

I will form a procastinators’ society where you just come and sit and do nothing.

    • Describe the Pokemon Go phenomenon in three words.
I’m too old for this. That’s five words (laughs).

Tomorrow at 5 pm and 7.30 pm. At Alliance Française Tickets at Rs 400. Details: sapanverma.in
