You know how some eateries have a long story (usually the ‘labour of love’ kind) behind their creation? Well Cheezy Treet on Poonamalee High Road (opposite Ega theatre) is not one of those. It is a simple case of owner and partner MS Vadivel, formerly in the pharmaceutical industry, noticing a vacuum in the baking industry and deciding to cash in. “All the good quality baked products are quite expensive these days. We focus on quality and the ingredients we use, and make sure that our prices are affordable,” he shares his no-fuss modus operandi. The ‘we’ in his sentence refers to his other partner located at another part of the globe and their man in-charge, master baker S Thirukumaran.
Raised in his family-run bakery in Bangalore, Thirukumaran learnt on the job and soon found himself moving from Hot Breads to the Abu Dhabi-based Lulu Hypermarket chain where he worked for a considerable 12 years. When asked about the treats at the bakery (all available on home delivery), he simply says, “Try them.
We do not use any refined products. Some of our best offerings are our whole meal bread, wheat bread and diabetic bread that has zero sugar and added fibres that makes it easy to digest.” We’re then treated to a gleaming, warm Danish pastry topped with a delicious custard and blueberry sauce. The guava cake that follows, is moist and full of flavour, but the chicken roll that we finish with, though tasty and generous on the meat, is a let down thanks to crumbly pastry.
This being our evening snack, we’ll leave it to you to discover the offerings at their chaat counter and take home a dry fruit and walnut honey loaf instead.
