No stranger to the city, Zara Umrigar has been showcasing her designs in Bengaluru for many years. But it was only in September that she decided to launch her own store in the city. “We’ve had stores in Bombay and Goa for a while now, and this seemed like the best new addition. I believe there is a gap in the market here for gowns and embroidered outfits,” she begins, adding that since she has clients flying down from various cities around South India to see her, it made sense to bring the store to them!
With a focus on gowns, the brand defines femininity in its silhouettes but with an edge: think bold embroidery. “The timeless look represents my label best. I stick to classic cuts with a subtle and sexy appeal, and all my pieces are hand-embroidered,” she tells us. Her new collection ranges from embroidered, minimalist, to cocktail gowns. “I’m also launching my prêt line for the first time, so expect fun skirts, crop tops and dresses,” reveals the 27-year-old. Speaking about how her designs come to life, she explains that she has plenty of concepts running through her mind. “I sketch for weeks, ponder over mood boards and embroidery swatches before I get started,” says Umrigar, who loves working with net, chiffon and Italian fabrics.
Since she started her label in 2009, she finds that she is more daring and experimental now. “Gaining confidence goes a long way in finding who you are as a designer. Eliminating that fear of boundaries makes you original and I feel I’ve found that,” says Umrigar.
