KRSMA Estates launches its range of vintages in town
From the KRSMA Estates, close to the historic town of Hampi, comes an award-winning range of wines courtesy Krishna Prasad and Uma Chigurupati (also known as the marathon couple) who set up their estate there in 2007.
World in a bottle
They currently have four varietals that are aged in fine grain French oak barrels. Fine attention has been paid to the packaging – the bottles come from France, the labels reflecting the heritage of the Vijayanagar empire come from Australia, the capsules from Spain and the natural corks from USA. We are informed that the estate won awards for their Chardonnay 2013, Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, and Sauvignon Blanc 2013 at the China Wine and Spirits Award 2013.
“Indian wines generally do not appeal to the international palate and have been struggling to make a mark on the international wine map. KRSMA will be among the first Indian wines that will cater to the tastes of a globally exposed audience,” says Prasad.
The sprawling 170-acre vineyard houses a high-end boutique winery with a capacity of 80,000 litres and is situated about 70kms away from the World Heritage site at Hampi.
“We have crushed five harvests, since we established in 2007, but this is the first time it will be available on shelves,” says Uma Chigurupati. KRSMA has a Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Chardonnay 2013, , Sangiovese 2012 and their flagship wine, Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 in Magnums out now. The flavours were clean and fresh – a good expression of the rich red soil of the region. “The iron-rich schist type soil, minimal rainfall and cool night time temperatures really help in bringing out the flavour of the grapes,” adds Chigurupati.
