THE QUEEN of prêt has acquired a new nickname this week, ‘the golden girl’. With all eyes on Alchemy, her upcoming Summer/Resort collection 2017, Dongre is putting together an ensemble accentuated with golden tints, we’re told. As we catch up with her for a quick sneak peek, 2016’s most googled Indian designer chuckles at our impatience. “Alchemy will be an extension of our ever present philosophy—simple, feminine and contemporary,” begins the 53-year-old. With its liquid gold colour theme borrowed from the yet-to-belaunched lipstick line from Lakmé featuring argan oil, she elaborates that the brand’s commitment towards organic ingredients appealed to her instantly.
However, as a champion of Indian crafts, Dongre’s designs will showcase unbleached and undyed versions of cotton silk (think creams and whites) and kora cotton material sourced from Varanasi. “We will be using organic cotton handspun by the weavers from the region, as it will reflect the luminescent shade of pure argan oil,” she explains. While most of the collection is predicted to be contemporary silhouettes fit for summer, the designer promises a couple of bridal pieces for her ardent followers “The idea here is to translate the colour scheme in my own way—featuring an elegant yet fuss-free wardrobe preferred by the modern Indian woman. The element of fusion is to be expected,” shares Dongre.
Path of innovation
Having explored various aspects of the country’s tradition including jadau jewellery from Jaipur previously, the couturier will be seen experimenting with the craft of gota patti this time. An applique-based hand embroidery from the region—generally associated with the bridal trousseau—gota patti will acquire a modern avatar at Dongre’s show. “And this time, Lakmé’s gender neutral platform echoes my own thoughts by proving to the world that fashion is for all,” adds the designer, while commenting on her first ever collaboration with the LFW finale team.
Alchemy will be unveiled on February 5.
