Padmini and Kavya Chandra revamp their new store
Soulful Hues, launched by mother-daughter duo Padmini and Kavya Chandra, is a nod to Padmini’s two decades of hands-on experience and Kavya’s love for a fusion of classic and contemporary. A spot for customised, hand-crafted ensembles for everything ethnic.
“I literally grew up in the factory around embroidery and craftsmanship and so it was a very natural transition for me,” begins Kavya who first got into the business officially when she interned with her mother at the age of 15. Padmini, on the other hand, is a trained textile designer who first set-up shop in Bombay nearly twenty years ago, with one master tailor and two workers growing it to a full-fledged factory that goes much beyond the average tailoring.
“We source our one-of-a-kind fabrics from Benaras, collaborating closely with the weavers. So, you will never see three of the same pieces and almost never see a repeat,” Kavya shares. The fabrics, that range from silks and tussars to chiffons and chanderis, are then enhanced through either contrasts or highlighting embroidery. “We keep a wide range of saris and unstitched fabrics. Some are elaborate enough (especially silks), and others we embellish with a wide range of hand-embroidery,” she tells us.
We love the shaded chiffons and georgettes from Kolkatta that they have reinvented with everything from zardosi and chikankari work to velvet applique, contrast backing borders and contrast blouses. With Kavya’s entry, they have expanded to making cocktail gowns with an Indian touch in georgettes, silks and crepes with clean-cut styles. They are embellished with subdued embroidery techniques like chikankari and aari – ‘ideal for an Indian wedding’. They also have a limited edition range of silk shirts in block colours with pops of contrast in the piping, and Amritsari kurtis in mulmul prints.
